Default All seasons or snow tires?

I just bought an STI and it has RE01r's on it. Im not about to drive on them in the winter.

My RS has Nokian Snow tires which Im a big fan of...

So should I look at getting a set of snow tires jsut for the winter months and then switch back to the RE01R's, or should I pickup a set of all Seasons like the Conti DWS's or Nitto NeoGens...

Looking for opinions, looking to buy something next week.

I plan on running 2 sets of tires, Summers only and either the A/S or snow.

If you are going to run two sets, there is no reason to get all seasons. Definitely get the snow tires.

get a performance winter tire ie: Dunlop wintersport, Bridgestone LM-60, Michilen Pilot Alpine, ect. Unless you feel the need for an "extreme snow tire" than go with a more aggresive snow tire. For subbies, performance winter tires get my vote.

Snow tires... you are in an area that has a real winter. I am in SoCal and I have snow tires for the times I want to go snowboarding and enjoying pointing and laughing at all the trucks and SUVs putting on chains.

since you will only be running them in the winter, all-seasons aren't the best choice, since they will get harder in the cold than winters. hard tires in icy slush can be scary. you are far enough south, i would go with a performance winter rather than a full winter. a performance winter will hold up to dry road driving better than a full winter tire.

Performance Winter. As in the Dunlop Winter Sport 3Ds.

Do you need more than one car to be drivable in winter? Why not use your Nokian shod RS all winter long?

Pretty simple.

If you're going to have two sets of tires, WINTERS for winter and grippy performance for summer.

Same here. I have Altimax Arctic Winter Tires that I swap on when I go up to the mountains. I'm going up tomorrow and I can't wait to drive in the snow!

how much snow do you get where you are? how much ice/freezing rain? how much slushy conditions?

The conditions local to you should be the determining factor here. A performance winter tire is probably a good choice if you see snow from time to time, but they might not behave well on ice or slush or conditions where snow is always on the road surface. also keep in mind the avg temperatures... if it's well below freezing... I mean bitch cold more than -10 below freezing, allseason tires are like hockey pucks, they don't stick well to cold pavement. But in and around freezing and a couple inches of snow a year, you can be fine with allseasons too, just be sensible.

If you go up a mountain to do some skiing or boarding, you want winter tires, even if it's once a year.

running summer tires in cold temps is a bad idea, snow or not. they will wear much faster and can chunk...plus, there is less grip because they turn into hockey pucks.

and besides, driving the STi in the snow is the fun part!!!!

I hate this crap. Yes you will have less grip then you would in higher ambient temps, but the drop off it not that extreme. You'll still out grip any snow tire.

Go to your local winter-series autox and tell me what tires the fast guys are running. Oh yeah, their max-performance summer setups. They do not wear that much faster either. A bunch over over-hyped BS. Pics of said chunking tires? That's right, you've never seen it. Chunking tires in your daily commute? Stay the hell off the roads as clearly you're driving like an *******!!!

Summer tires in 30 degree dry weather are completely safe. Look where he lives for god sakes, the average temp is probably 40+ in the winter.

I'm sure for the $$$, he'll find a way to have plenty of snow-fun in his RS.

I daily drive summer tires in the winter here. They CLEARLY have much more grip than my all-seasons, even around the 35 degree mark. At 20 they start to fall off to where my all-seasons are (just a rough estimation).
So because they only perform as well as all seasons at 20 degrees, they are unsafe? So then all-seasons are unsafe as well?

Sure, by the 10-15 degree mark they have dropped off significantly. But unsafe for street driving? Surely not.

Having the ability to go around a given corner 5 mph faster before reaching your traction limit isn't a safety feature for a sane driver.

i've chunked summer tires (my star specs) in the cold on the street, never at the track...but don't presume anything about me driving like a maniac because I assure I drive more safely and courteously on the street than 80% of the drivers out there (at least 95% of the time).

you run the summer tires in a motorsports event because you can actually get enough heat into them that no winter tire would be as good with their soft sidewalls. and you're comparing your own setup with all-seasons...people call them no-seasons for a reason--they aren't ideal for any season.

now driving around on summers in the low 30s isn't bad, but if it starts raining, summer tires can get a little sketchy on the street, and once anything is freezing, it can get really bad. i never said they were unsafe on dry roads, but the grip does fall off noticeably on really cold days, and would you only go for a drive when you know you can turn around and get home if there is precipitation coming? come on, be realistic...most people aren't driving garage queens.

I plan to drive my RS with teh Nokians when the weather is really bad (snow/ice.)

I jsut ordered some NeoGen's after 3/4 friends of mine that are local all recommended them for the price.

When the weather is crap, Ill drive the RS, till then Ill drive the STI with the all seasons.
