They sound like cry babies because they lost out on someone's cash. It won't matter in four months for the early R32s.

well yes and no.

i know of someone locally who bought a gt-r from another importer, and is currently in a holding facility in japan, waiting for the 15 year crossover so he will be legal. if the gov't does investigate and finds more illegal imports, they could change the laws or suspend imports entirely and leave him in a lurch

Do you know something we don't know about import legislation? I'm not a lawyer, but if the car's papers are cleared than your good to go. If this dude made a deal for a car before its cleared and he doens't actually have the car - that's just stupid. Will people never learn? I'm sure there a few imports that slipped through the Hell's Angels Port Authority in Vancouver and are quietly cruising the streets.

read the jns import site. they, as well as many other importers have holding facilities in japan for people waiting to be legal. we're not the only country that has a 15 year rule. for example i think australia does the same thing. i can't imagine what the mad rush could be like once they become legal... prices could skyrocket, and availability for good unomolested gt-r's will be nonexistent. so people buy now and sit on it.

as for paperwork... the only thing i can think of is that a)they lied on the vehicle description, or b)using license plates from another vehicle.

could they go as far as swapping vin's from a canadian car?

Yes I am looking at an R32 GTR....and I have no comment for A$$holes who illegally import any type of car because it ruins it for all the people who are doing it legally

BTW- I will be buying a car (GTR) in a month or two before they are legal and will have to have it stored at the brokers in Japan.

oh and I know about the guy in BC who is having his GTR stored until it is legal. I have no problems about doing this.

FWIW- there have been some Skylines imported illegally and imported in as R31's. If customs catches you they will either cut up the car OR have it crushed at the owners expense. They often swap the VIN's from the older(legal) cars to the newer (illegal) cars. They may not catch you however the owner is still commiting an offence and if caught could face charges.

I would not say that JNS is being a "crybaby" because they lost money....quite the opposite. There have been a few illegal importations in the Edmonton area and also in Ontario....they are just putting out the word that this crap is going on and are warning people about it. JNS and other importers I know of are all against doing any illegal importing due to the extreme risks involved. They are also warning the customer or potential customers that there are illegal R32's out there and to be aware if they are tempted to purchase one.

spt_impreza: I totally aggree with you. I've seem some pictures of a R32 GTS-T at your local drag strip... which was also obviously imported illegaly. Im looking into getting a GT-R as well, but it might be a year or so from now (there were a ton of R32 GT-R's made... over 40,000 i think?)

Also... i haven't asked import concern or jns-imports yet... but will they arrange shipping for a GT-R if you already own a GT-R over in Japan? Because I was thinking of buying one from the yahoo japan auctions or through a dealer over there... and then shipping it to canada when its legal and all.. maybe it will be cheaper this way instead of paying for all the broker fees?

IMHO I believe that the import companies can and will find better cars than you could find over the net......there is a lot of paperwork and speaking japanese that needs to be done to just buy a car from Japan. For me it is worth the broker fee that I have to pay inorder to get a good GTR. If you have any questions shoot Importconcern an email (Chris K or Chistian) and they will gladly answer anything.

Are the brokers charging a "set fee" or a percentage when it comes to importing or do they base the surcharge on whatever they feel they can get out of the customer ? I've seen the on-line auctions and the rating system is clear enough. I don't really see how the brokers can necessarily get a "better" car for me as they aren't in Japan any more than I am. Really, what's the difference between them buying from one of those online auctions and one of us ? The grading system is there in Roman numerals and other than that you don't really see any write up on the car as per say. Many of these places clearly say they will also arrange for the car to be delivered to port , pay the export fees / do the paperwork and ship to the port of your choice anywhere in the world. Destinations in the Carribean were about $1200 Cdn from what I say listed.

Not trying to slam the importers , just looking for good value for the money. If they charge a "reasonable" surcharge to save me the hassle that's fine, if its such a large amount that I could have purchased a much better car that's a different story. My biggest concern would be getting the car through customs since I'm in Ont and the car would be coming in through Vancouver. That said I'm sure there are a million generic brokers in Vanc who will file paperwork on your behalf. With the money I would save it would be worth buying a one-way ticket "standby" to Vancouver and driving the car home, or just have it put on the train for something like $500.
