Question Possible to do sub 7.0 0-60 runs w/o turbo, supercharger, or nitrous?

I have a 98 RS with a JC intake, underdrive pulley, and a free flowing muffler. I am guessing my hp is around 190. Most 0-60 runs are in the low 7's with a few 6.9's and one 6.8. I was wondering if anyone was running faster with similar mods. I cannot afford a turbo or supercharger and don't want to blow up my engine with NOS, but I would like to make my Impreza faster. Any suggestions?

Have you looked at Rallispec's cams yet? I hear they're still being designed, the DOHC ones that is, and it's substantially less than a turbo setup.

Check out www.rallispec.com and mail em for details.

Since it sounds like you've only replaced the muffler, you could replace the exhaust piping from the headers back. Take it to a muffler shop, have them fabricate everything with 2.25" piping, throw in a 2.25" cat and weld it up to the muffler you already have. Should cost around $300, and it will probably net you about 10 more horsepower.

If you want a turbo, but don't have the funds, I'd just save up until April of next year. As soon as the WRX hits I'm sure there will be a plethora of used turbo kits available with not many miles on them.

I'm getting the same numbers as you with my mods. 6.8, 6.9 w/ a g-tec. I think I could do better with more practice but not much better

My folks's 91 miata ran low sevens with a gtech! The miata for that year was rated with 115hp and errr... almost no TQ and a 0-60 of 9 ticks. So I won't trust gtech that much anymore.

Tim, I thought replacing the exhaust from the cat back would be a good idea also, that is, until I did some research. There was a SCC mag a few months ago that tested many aftermarket items for the 2.5RS on a four wheel dyno and all of the enlarged catback exhausts actually lost horsepower due to the decrease in needed backpressure for the engine. Apparently a larger pipe will only help when you have more power, like with a turbo.

That's why I said 2.25" piping. SCC found losses when going to 2.5" piping. Larger diameters will decrease the exhaust gas scavenging effect. Basically scavenging is when the gases pull themselves along in a smooth flow, if the diameter is too large (for the amount of flow) you'll get turbulence in the exhaust stream. Replacing the intermediate pipe (cat back section) will help some, but if you want best results replace the the cats as well with a high flow 2.25" cat. Have the muffler shop straighten out some of those bends too and you'll be in business.

Well, remember that the GTech is very accurate...relative to itself. If you put it up against real timers, it will be off. But it'll be dead on if you use it to compare modifications on the same car using the same GTech.
