Rent a car to go snowboarding. Would it be cheaper than dedicated set of wheels/tires?
Maybe. Not sure if there is enough clearance to fit chains on WRX. I do know that on my 2005 Legacy GT with 225/45R17 Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 I do not have enough space to put my pinky betwen the perch and tire. Krzys |

My summer setup uses Saabaru BBS wheels 17x7 with +48 offset, if my memory works.
I did switchover yesterday so I should remember ;-) Krzys |

From Auto Zeitung: "Dry: Poor rolling resistance but strong dry braking and very quiet. Sluggish in the handling tests Wet: Long braking distances and sluggish handling characterise the Bridgestone in the wet. Tends to understeer. Excellent aquaplaning result Snow: The Blizzak doesn't offer much grip on the snow, but is much better in the slush Overall: Excellent in standing water and slush, the Bridgestone is comparatively poor in the dry and the wet" http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article...-Tyre-Test.htm Maybe your relatives in Europe can send you a set of Continental TS850. |

So if Michelin brough their Pilot Alpin PA4, Bridgestone may bring LM-32 (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....=Blizzak+LM-32) - 2 sizes available now, and Dunlop may bring 4D (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....inter+Sport+4D) - 1 size available now then Continental will follow the suite and bring TS 830 and 850.
I am glad I did not need new tires this winter as it seems that US market is starved by lack of new performance winter tires (except Michelin offerings). Next winter looks promising. Krzys PS Current winter tire stable: 03 Passat GLS - 195/65R15 Continental TS 810, 05 Legacy GT - 225/45R17 Continental TS 810, 10 Volvo S40 T5 - 205/55R16 Dunlop 3D. |

Thanks.
When you say mount and dismount "tires" do you mean the whole rim with the tires already on it, or do you mount tires on the rims like you would your bicycle? Thanks.

And I'd rather mount the wheels in my garage where it's dry and just drive thru the checkpoints on snow tires then have to pull over during a crazy storm half way up the mountain to put chains on. I bring them just incase though cause sometime caltrans can be a PITA. |

Winter Tire Advice
I recently purchased a 2009 wrx that has Hankook summer tires. I will be driving in the snow this winter and need suggestions on good snow tires...
Also, is it necessary to buy a second set of rims for winter? |

It's not necessary to buy another set of wheels but when TireRack.com will mount your tires on a set of new steelies for $200 or so, it'll pay for itself quickly because you won't be mounting and balancing tires on a wheel twice a year. Last edited by Digital Dillon; 10-22-2012 at 08:19 AM. |

Why is there such limited options for 205/50-16?
That size puts me in a really tough position. |

Quick TPMS question, what happens if I install Wheels / Tires without TPMS? I don't mind any dash lights, but I want to know if there will be any annoying beeping or so. ( 2012 WRX ) I will only be using these tires in the winter.
