OEM Roof rack vs aftermarket?
snowboard season is coming and i need to get a roof rack.
I don't have any experience with roof racks and i had a few questions. 1) what's the difference between OEM vs YAKIMA racks? they look about the same. OEM- http://www.subarugenuineparts.com/pr...oducts_id=1309 YAKIMA- http://www.rei.com/product/835221/wh...ir#video-inner 2) what's a reliable site that sells roof racks at a decent price? *i saw a promo code somewhere for http://www.subarugenuineparts.com. anyone where to find? thanks for any info!!! |

They all do the same thing.
But whatever "looks" best to you, or just buy the one off SGP to make your life easier. |

The OEM rack cant be locked onto the car, so anyone with the right size torx screwdriver could remove them off your car.
if some one really wants to remove the racks from you car then a little lock isn't going to stop them. you can also find the OEM racks for $150+ vs the $390 for these... |

I have the flush whispbars. I got them because I thought the mounts look way better than the tringle looking oem mounts and are have a slightly lower profile. I don't hear a thing when driving. Bought them local since with shipping it wasn't much more.

My friend bought the OEM rack for his wrx last year.. broke within 2 days (metal pipe cracked), returned it for Thule, no issues since.

Here is some Interesting info. I personally have tried the Yakima round bars for 6 years. On my new car I went with the whispbars because 1. they are quieter and 2. they sit much lower to to the car and look better. Sound of the bars is important to me, since I think the round bars are loud. I also use a cargo box so roof clearance isn't a big issue for me. But if you plan on using a ski rack and need to haul snowboards upside down then you might want to thing of roof clearance. Btw stock Subaru racks are made my Yakima. |

You will most likely blast me for the "sticker bombed" wind faring, but I have had this set noe for some time I use it every winter, and no issues. It's just Yakima bindings sitting on Subaru OEM Rack with an Inno faring.

I also use risers when I need to, and it dosen't scratch at all. Also no real noise is made either.
