I remember the concept/mule Nissan built with a modified GT-R driveline in it; that would have been interesting, not the appearance package ugly-mobile they actually built though, that thing was an abomination.

If I lived in Key West or the island of Aruba, I could see myself owning this. Otherwise, not really sure what's the appeal. But to each their own!

I think it has to do with settling. I don't know if anyone's voiced that they'd take this over a WRX or STI 5-door. But since those don't currently exist, we'd settle for this hot 3-door hatch. BUT, we can't have this either. So then it feels like we're being told we're asking too much when we'd even settle for a relatively small and relatively less convenient vehicle over what we really want, which is something we used to readily have available.

If a 5-door WRX and STI AND the Yaris GR-4 were available to us at the same time, I think I'd have to test drive the STI and the Yaris before making a final decision. It would depend on whichever felt most engaging to drive.

I would take the GR4 Yaris over a new Hatch STI. 2800lbs and a better power to weight ratio of the current STI.

I most likely would too, but plenty of other people would want the extra doors, plus Boxer motor. However, we don't know what the power is yet, so it's hard to really say. Current power-to-weight of the STI? Sure.

If you watch that review, they weren't totally keen on the GR4... Kind of a luke-warm hatch.

Nothing the aftermarket won't fix.

But they also stated this version wasn't the high performance model either. So it is missing the Torsen diffs, etc...

But as Chano said the aftermarket will fill in the gaps. Just like it does for the WRX and STI.

his car sits in Belgium, a few miles away from Germany. Toyota prohibits delivery until the 16th of November

I didn't know they were releasing this in Europe with LHD. Makes it more wrong that they won't bring it here.

Sounds like a 3 cylinder. Which is quite unique. I always loved how Triumphs sound. Just like how Audi's 5 cylinder is so unique as well.

As much as I wish it were a five door, I wish more that the USDM got it regardless of door count.

F*** you Toyota, in the same way you F***ed your biggest customer base.

Not sure how much this has been discussed, but for those making comparisons with the STI, the fully loaded GR-4 model is about 11% more expensive than a fully loaded STi. That's a lot of money to pay for 3 cylinder, sub-compact hatchback, built off of a 13k platform (albeit heavily modified).

I figured it would be priced right at the STI if Toyota offered it here and we wouldn't get the RZ High Performance, likely the RZ. ~$37k.

STI
JPY 393.8

GR4 RZ
JPY 396.0

An STI gets compared to all sorts of sports cars and tarted up econoboxes. These are not box check cars. They're fun first, justify second. And the Yaris is just plain cool that would have an STI equalling cult following. Can't get a following if you don't product.

I did not realize that.

What about the base price of each? Where does that fall?

The base RZ is 3.96 million yen, the RZ high performance is 4.56 million yen. A loaded STI "Type S" when it was still being manufactured, was 4.13 million yen, with the base model around 3.9 million yen.

The base RZ would be more comparable to a performance package equipped WRX, and the RZ high performance comparable to the STI in terms of features and mechanicals (the base RZ has no lsd front or rear, which the STI comes standard with).

At this price point, it would be tough sell in the US in any meaningful quantities. (40g for a yaris).

All that being said, I think it's a cool car conceptually, but due to a number of factors, I dont think it's particularly compelling offering, at least for US buyers. If a corolla gr-4 comes over to the US, it will need to be more price competitive.
