Default 2008 LA Auto Show: Honda Eco Assist teaches hypermiling

Quote:
Honda will make it easier to be green with their new Eco Assist (short for Ecological Drive Assist System). Introduced on the Insight concept car, Eco Assist combines a dash display and an Econ powertrain mode to help maximize fuel economy.

To train the driver, the color behind the speedometer changes to indicate current fuel efficiency. By driving smoothly, a driver can shift the hue from blue to green, thereby learning the practices that save fuel and also money.

The system also tracks fuel economy over time, serving as part training tool and part video game. The driver’s performance is scored by displaying leaves—more the better.
To help the driver further, there is an Econ mode that optimizes engine and transmission performance to save fuel. It also impacts the air conditioning, idle stop, and energy capturing from regenerative braking.

When the Insight goes on sale in the spring, the Eco Assist features should have special appeal to hypermilers trying to maximize their performance.

When Honda begins deliveries of its 2010 Insight hybrid this spring, it will come with a technology designed to help owners improve their driving habits to maximize fuel efficiency. Called Eco Assist, the system consist of a driver-activated ECON mode that automatically optimizes fuel use, plus a set of gauges to encourage “environmentally responsible driving.”

“Hybrid drivers enjoy trying to get the most fuel economy from their vehicles,” said Dan Bonawitz, vice president of American Honda. “The visual nature of Eco Assist is intended to help drivers improve their efficient driving skills by making the hybrid experience more fun and rewarding.”

The ECON mode does most of the work for the driver, by optimizing CVT transmission, engine, and related powertrain components to conserve fuel. ECON mode also adjusts air conditioner operation, increases the potential for engaging the idle stop feature sooner and increase battery charging during regenerative braking.

Even without ECON activated, the car will use the speedometer background color to provide real-time guidance on driving behavior. Fuel-saving activities like smooth acceleration and braking make the meter glow green. Somewhat less efficient driving makes the meter glow blue-green. Aggressive starts and stops that consume extra fuel make the meter glow blue.

A scoring system gives motorists keep an overall measure of their fuel efficiency by providing long-term feedback through graphic ‘leaves,’ which grow over time as drivers learn and implement driving practices that increase fuel economy.

Are they going to finally fix the accuracy issues of their MPG computer? The one on the current Fit is usually at least 4mpg optomistic.

At least these hues will keep people from looking down and trying to catch numbers from a screen. This is a nice peripheral that will hopefully not be too much of a distraction.

That picture is the concept that was unveiled at the Paris motor show in October. The production version is supposed to be unveiled at the Detroit show in January.

Expect it to get HID's instead of LED headlights, to get somewhat bigger side mirrors, and less weird wheels. Oh, and for the interior to be dumbed-down.

Still, should be good. I'm expecting it to be my next car...

Amen, It's on the top of my short list along with the Fit, Fit Hybrid (2011 release), owned Subarus since I was 16 but they need to get with the program, 26mpg is not reasonable anymore.

This is a true statement, pretty much everyone on FitFreak has the same results.

depending on how good the gas mileage is... it might not be that much better with the insight from a gas savings point of view. Look up gallons per mile and you'll see what i mean.

Hybrids are better from an environmental point of view.... at least until they have some that have CRAZY high mileage ratings.

I'm in line for this car, but I don't see how this is big news.

The Prius has the whole hybrid mapping display to teach you how to drive it.
What am I missing here?

Is this still true? I thought it was only a problem (and subsequently addressed by Honda) on the 07s.
