Photo Printers- Please advise
Good morning all-
I am in the market for a new photo printer and need some insight. I have a new G2 and I want a printer that can reproduce the same quality as closely as possible. I want an inkjet type and so far am considering the Canon S900/S9000 but the new HPs also caught my attention. I am not to big on Epson or Lexmark (I am open minded enough to listen about their virtures though). What really put me off about the HPs is that the ink is so expensive yet the capacity has decreased while the price has not. The indivdual ink tanks from the Canon is very appealing. I had a Canon in the past that worked great with the indivdual tanks and also had an HP 722 that was rock solid. Thanks for all the help! ps- Bring back the :monkey:

I have a Cannon S800, and the photo quality is great! When I bought this one, the Cannon printers beat out all of the HP's in quality. I assume you can expect the same from teh S900 series.
My only gripe is that you will have to use Canon's PhotoPaper Pro with the printer (for printing photos). Other types of paper come out grainy. Edit: Yea, the individual ink tanks rock. You will generally go through one or two colors much faster than the others, so this definately lowers the cost. |

I have had one of the old style HP photosmarts for years, great machine superb image quality although a bit slow. I just bought one of the newest Photosmarts but have yet to test it out. I am sure it will be as good if not better.

I'd stay away from HP, as whenever a friend bugs me for printer help its usually some inane HP problem. Just anecdotal evidence tho, so take it FWIW.
Personally my favorite brand is Epson. I like the Photo 820s a lot. I don't know much about any other printers but the photos from the 820 are beautiful and you should be able to find one for under $100. |

If you really, TRULY want a beautiful print, but aren't concerned about time or price so much... if you can still find one somewhere... Alps Dye-sub printers are absolutely WONDERFUL!!!! I remember seeing them a few years back... about $300... but a gorgeous photo. Only downside is that it uses tapes to print... one color at a time... and takes somewhere around 15minutes per page. |

Some times, when I feel like I need to take a break, I go outside and scream at the cars that drive by and then I feel better.
Otherwise, your mom. |

I have an HP Photosmart p1000 and it's been excellent. The photo quality is outstanding - most people never notice my photos were printed on an inkjet. Like somebody said about the Canon printers, you also must use Hewlett Packard photo paper. Otherwise, the blacks will look slightly blueish. Text quality on the Photosmart is also absolutely amazing - text looks just as good as laser print, and it's very fast when printing in black and white. This was the biggest problem I had with my previous Canon and Epson printers... the text printing looked HORRIBLE!
It's really nice being able to slide the memory card from your digital camera into the printer and print them without turning your computer on. Another feature which I haven't taken advantage of yet is the ability to print through an infrared port from devices like PDAs and HP digital cameras. Also, the ink tanks seem to last FOREVER! I have only replaced my ink cartridges once since I bought the printer over a year ago, and I've covered a bulletin board with all the photos I've printed! My Epson went through black ink cartridges every 150 pages. |

i hear the MOM series are the bomb, huge ink reserves, superior speed over all other printers, and prints from edge to edge.
anywho, i have a Epson 1270, large format printer. since most printers charge crazy amounts for a single 11 x 17 print, i needed something to produce great prints for my design portfolio. even back in the day of my older epson, it was better then this huge $17,000 canon printer at school. i'd rater take pictures with a canon then produce them. love my camera, thinking of getting a digital from them. i researched printers for months, didn't like anything from HP, boy Staples hated me, i had them hook each printer up so i could see the quality. out of the entire line of printers they had, Epson still came out on top. |

Canon S900. For the price, you'll get lab quality prints at a fracdtion of what you think it would cost. You definately need to use their paper, but it's totally worth it. I work at a school that used Epsons for a while and they have been consistently troublesome from day one. And, surprisingly, few of the problems are because of the users. My vote is for a Canon. They have a lot of experience with photography, after all. Unless you want larger prints like auricom was talking about, the S900 will be great.

I bought the new HP psc2210xi, and absolutely it rocks!! The quality of the photos are superb, and having owned a couple of HP's in the past, reliability is not an issue with them. HP released the new series of printers, the new one with the four digits code numbering, and this ones has the best photo quality at the time, much better than the old 900 series printers, which I owned one. Be aware that HP is the only one that advertise the amount of ink on the outside of the box, others never tell you how much ink are inside their big cartdriges.

one of the reasons that I am compelled to Canon printers is that we have a really sweet EPP deal with them here. We have one with Epson also but not as attractive. None with HP, Price is not a deciding factor though. I was given an Epson 880 and I could never get it to print better than my old HP. The Espon was rated 1280x720 (or something close to that) where my HP was 600x600. Even with their respective paper I had no luck. The Canon S900/S9000 also use dye based ink vs. pigment based ink. I know the new top-o-line Epsons are also dye based.................

I still wouldn't recommend a Canon inkjet. From past experience, they don't excel in everyday printing (although the new lines my excel in photos), and aren't the most reliable printers out there. When I worked at Best Buy, we saw a ton of returns and warranty claims on Canon printers, and almost none for HP and Epson. |

The day to day print quality is actually pretty good on the Canon. I'll admit that it's not a laser printer, but that's not what it's for. The question is about photo printers, implying that that's what it will be used for.
And my Epson bashing is strictly from experience with more than one, and more than one model. I can't document any problems that they have on a scale any larger than what I've dealt with directly. Check out some sites where users rate the printers and take into account what's been mentioned here. Mostly, do more research before you buy. Good luck! |

Thanks guys for the advise. I always consult CNET first. I find epinions.com really useful for this too. dpreview.com is the digi cam site out there and they talk about the printers some. I wanted to see what you all were using and your thoughts. It is a tough decision though. I can get the wide format S9000 for $250. I have heard though that Canon is lilkey to replace the S900/9000 soon though. They have introduced the new i550 and i850 so I would expect the same revamp for the s900/s9000. has anyone heard something simialar? source of rumor was dpreview.com

It's the 8x11 dye Sub printer. I own one. A bit on the expensive side. $500 for the printer. The dye-sub replacement are $45 for 50 prints! Paper is at $20 for 25 sheets. But if you want professional prints - this is it. It can also be a printer for PCs as well as a stand alone printer - just plug in your Smart card or get an adopter for the Compact Flash cards. You can print several on one page, even print one picture as a background photo with other photos in the foreground. |
