![]() I'm having tons of problems.
We (JDMFLCL+Me) wired everything exactly as the thread instructions described. When I turn the key to ignition, all of the solenoids are clicking, pump primes, but I don't get any spark. Help!\\ 1995 EJ20G with 2002 coilpacks |

![]() ^ Go see my post on page 10 about the igniter ground. On robs the ground pin was in the center (third pin) mine was the first pin so you might have soldered that ground pin to a coil and left the proper wire hanging.
It seems Subaru used two different EJ20G igniters one being the one you see on the first page and the one i have and they have different ground placement. Rob's EJ20G Igniter with Center ground (3rd Pin) (Believe this to be 94+) ![]() My EJ20G Igniter with ground off to the side (1st Pin) (Believe this to be only 93) ![]() Last edited by dr3w; 04-25-2010 at 05:34 PM. |

![]() We've basically come down the conclusion its not related to the ignition. When the car is put into on with the key, it starts flickering right then.

![]() It was his dumb battery. It decided to die while we were making a major change to his ignition system. Jumped him off my car and it fired right up. He got a new battery and its working great AFAIK.

But ya i was surprised by it when i first saw it and then when i also realized the wiring was different.. had no clue legacy's where the same way so basically all WRX/Legacy 93 EJ20G's used them i guess. Would love to know the reasons behind why they only used them one year though. |

![]() Another satisfied customer.. My wagon is running 1 bar at .030 gapped BKR6ES plugs... Where there was major missing, there is now none. Also managed to get the connetors from my local wrecking yard for a song so no nasty spades , just solder and heatshrink.

![]() x2 ^ i could only find sti coils they are a tiny bit shorter as far as boots go, so i had to stretch out the lil springs inside.
but im running 1.0bar cleanly! thanks to the original poster! |

![]() ^ um you don't have coil on plugs so this thread doesn't apply to you unless you did like me and run the stock EJ20G electronics on an EJ20K.

![]() Just a reminder since i get asked this so often.
If you have a metal igniter(1993) your ground is on Pin 1, if your igniter is plastic(94+) your ground pin will be like rob mentioned Pin 3. See post #254 |

Rob - nice work! This is a fantastic tip and a super easy fix. FYI, I found that I didn't have to lever my engine at all. Simply turning the coil upside down and inserting allowed it to get in the head, then flipped it right-side up. Super easy. ------ Update: apparently I magically possess another issue. I think the coil issue was compounding another one. Still have intermittent missing, but not as much of an effect as before with the old coils. Also have some backfires as well. One thing that was confusing (sorry Rob) is that the pictures don't exactly match. You have to follow the instructions and use the "top" coil picture for proper pin wiring. |

![]() Had someone try to do this on the car I just picked up, good to have some reference so I actually understand what was done. Just curious tho, does anyone know what the ECU signal sends to the igniter (or coils now)? I have no spark and the ignition output wires are grounded with the key off (both at the ecu and where they would have gone into the igniter), and with the key on they jump to .05 V. Sound normal?

![]() I did this on a friend's car. The coils have power/ground/signal. The ECU just sends a small voltage to the coil and they fire. Sort of like a relay.
If the signal from the ECU is that small voltage, it sounds normal. Check the power and grounds. |

![]() Ok so I have some questions. I have a 96 v2 sti in my car but when the swap was done the 2000 rs coil pack (with the built in ignitor) was used and apparently the plug wires are custom using the dohc plug boots and the proper boots for the pack. What I am wondering is if this conversion could be benificial and what I would need to do differantly since I have no seperate ignitor? I am curious due to the fact that the coilpack is only secured by one bolt and as such has the ability to bounce around which just doesn't seem right to me and also the special plug wires make it kind of a pain when it time to change them. Any help/suggestions would be greatly apprerciated.
