definitely should be able to see what you are welding. either the shade you're using is much too dark or the lens is extremely dirty. i weld with a shade 11-12 lens and have no problem viewing.

I bought a cheap autodarkening helmet on Amazon. It looked cool but my field of vision was terrible. Bought the one at Lowe’s and have been very very happy with it.

Sounds like your lense is too dark. IF it is adjustable, lighten it up. If it is old style manual, you'll need a lighter lense. Yes, you need to see what you're doing.
