Default OT: Buying a Sewing machine

I'm planning to pick up a sewing machine in the next few days as a gift. Budget is approx (or just under) $300 all inclusive if possible.

Unfortunally, I have a few (many) questions as my knowledge is slighly lacking in this topic.

1) the most basic question... are there any "good" shops around that sells sewing machines? I have seen them at places like walmart but they seem to only sell the base model versions. As I have no clue how much the going rate for them is, a shop that offers a honst price is important.

2) some googl'ing tells me that I probably would want a entry level electronic controlled sewing machine instead of a manual/mechanical version as they are more accurate. Does anybody have any suggestions? I'm tempted to stay with the bigger brands and singer or brother so parts and accessories are easier to come by in the future.

3) are there anything special I should look for in buying a sewing machine?

4) is there anything else I should know.. hehe...

Thanks in advance!

Why do you need a sewing machine?

Sorry I don't know much about sewing machines I hate sewing.

Probably depending on what you need it for depends on what type you need. There's a girl on here who sews...I think it was in the dog thread she sews dog clothes...I bet she would know enough to help you. I just can't remember which girl it was maybe Sharkbait but not sure her dog is huge so it makes me think it wasn't her??? I'll see if I can find you her name.

SandyLam would probably be the best person to answer, not sure if she still browses. Your second best help would come from Semaj or Hypa because all they ever did was sit at home, browse the forums and sew co@k holsters.

^^ HAHA

The machine would be more for just "normal" sewing. Anything from making stuffed animals to shirts and pants. There might be a little bit of quilting too...

I don't think she would be working much with thicker materials tho (like jeans material) or would need the functions of embroidary.

ps.. yeah I know this is kinda a wierd place to ask, but my knowledge of this topic is VERY limited.. so limited I don't even know where to start asking for help.. rofl

Take a look at Pfaff and Juki? My mom owns sewing machines from those two brands...the big commercial ones. Brother and Singer should also be good brands too. The Pfaff dealer where my mom bought here Pfaff sewing machine, about 20 years ago, is still around on Granville and 8th. Pfaff should have smaller home machines.

Edit: I forgot to add, a sewing machine is only as accurate as you are. If you can't sew straight, you can't sew straight.

this is what i was just going to say Pfaff, dont waste your money on anything else pending where you are there is one on 8th and Granville one in Richmond in Steveson and one in Coquitlam. i bought one for my Ex 2years ago and did a lot of shopping on this subject and you can see 1 Pfaff can last you 10-20 years but others maybe 1-5 years, its more expensive up front but in the long run you save i think they also have a buy back up grade policy. Pfaff start off in $1000 i think it was cant remember i spent $2500 for my Ex and thats just abit above starter but she has 5 patern's that is the most important thing for her so she can do lots of different styles of sew
