Not at all. SVXdc's instructions are clear as day. As long as you're following it you'll be good. Now that he has EVERYTHING you need to complete it, this should be cake. I had to figure a lot of stuff on my own lol.

I just bought a BRZ head unit to go into the Subaru XV. I assume the install will be the same since the base XV uses the same crappy head unit.

Completed on the XV. Everything works just waiting on the Nav bezel from the dealer.

Well I finished the install of the FW602US in my wrx. A few little pbs along the lines but thanks to a good friend, we fixed the issue. VSS works, but it appears to read 20mph +/- above what the speedo shows on my cluster (when driving and looking at VSS input in the diagnostic menu)... Odd?!

I also realized to my dismay that I couldn't read the mp3 files directly from my usb as I was able to do right before I made the switch! I had no idea the FT didn't allow this. My friend plugged in his nano and it worked, so I now the usb/aux functions work, I just don't understand why my usb stick won't be read anymore (it worked fine before).

But all in all, GPS, BT, VSS, rear camera, HDradio and everything else minus the sat works great! I need to finish my camera install and continue to get familiar with the FT's functions.

Download Subaru's user manual for this HU. See link to owner's manuals in my 'Subaru stock HU info' thread. The manual has a section that spells out what file formats and folder organizations are acceptable.

Thanks! I'll check it out but why would the same usb drive, Fat32 formatted, 4Gb which worked just fine with stock unit and chinese unit all of sudden not work with Ft unit... I'll try a different drive just in case, but that just doesn't make sense, unless it was a fluke.

Edit: it was a fluke. tried a 16Gb drive, and worked just as it should. Not sure what happened if the other one, ehh... all working just fine

Edit: any hack to skip the two 1st screens after you power up unit?

It's a different HU, made by a different manufacturer. So there's no guarantee it will do everything the same as your WRX's original non-nav HU.

On all of these HUs that read USB flashdrives, they have a very simplified "operating system", not at all like Windows.

For example, most don't sort filenames -- they see the list in the same order that the files physically appear in the flash drive's table of contents. This is why people have often posted about being surprised that the HU doesn't display the list in the order they expected (and you have to use a utility to copy files to a flash drive to make sure they're written in the desired order).

So some of these HUs can get confused when they run across a file that they don't like (e.g., too large, unsupported encoding, flash drive too large, etc.).

Love the nav thus far. The only grip i have about this FW602US nav system is that it's a wee bit slow at times, and same with registering my touch. I guess my opinion is biased as the only comaprison I have is my tablet or phone. Not a deal breaker, just my experience thus far.
Here are some pics of the rear camera setup (CCD2000/cut some trim to make it more subtle location) and inside shots (and yes the correct bezel would be better, i'll get to that eventually):

Yeah nice job on the camera install. I thought about doing it but having to run wires through the whole car makes me sick May be next summer when I install my amps and component speakers I'll do it at the same time.

Also I was wondering how you guys deal with the ground cable. I can't seen to find a place to ground it.

Other than the grommet part between the hatch and body (a pain. Used grease to make it easier to slide), a little grinding of the driver plastic license plate housing to fit the cable nice & snug, the wiring from rear to front was SUPER easy! Just pass it via the roof/upper window seal trim (as opposed to lower trim). Total time: 10mn.

Default Oem sub

So far it's been idk 8 months since I retro'd the nav and couldn't be happier. Yea it's got quirks (takes a little time to find a satellite from time to time being my only real complaint) but I'm not using a stock GPS antenna so I can't fault the system. Another rather funny quirk, which I'm assuming has something to do with the disconnected vss is the "phone connected" block covering the screen while in reverse, completely blocking the camera view at the worst possible moment lol.

Wanted to know, if I want to add the oem trunk or under-seat sub, do I buy the nav or non nav unit? Common sense tells me to get the unit with the non nav harness but I'd rather get a second opinion before making a $$$ mistake. Thanks all!

I don't think that has anything to do with lack of VSS. Most likely, it's simply bad timing (the two things happen at about the same time after you get in the car -- the HU recognizing your phone, and you shifting into reverse). Could also be a bug, but I'm guessing the designers opted to have the "phone connected" pop-up take precedence over everything else on the screen (including the rear camera view, which itself takes precedence over everything else).

Does Subaru offer a version of their under-seat sub for cars with the FT nav?

You definitely don't want a sub with harnesses for cars with the older OEM Kenwood nav (14-pin). But if Subaru has versions with either the 20-pin (non nav) or Toyota-style (FT nav) harnesses, you could go either way. I'd recommend the 20-pin, since more people would be interested in that if/when you decide to sell it. In a few years, if Subaru continues switching their HUs to Toyota-style harnesses (and assuming they don't switch to yet a different style of harness down the road), then at that point it might be better to go with the Toyota style.

BTW, it looks like some of Subaru's under-seat sub kits still include both the 20-pin and 14-pin harnesses. There are always people who are interested in buying the one you don't use, either for a used sub they got without harnesses, or to use for an aftermarket sub.

I haven't seen that model yet. Where did you see it?

Yes, there are quite a few different variations on the FT nav HU. It seems that almost every different Subaru model and year gets a different model number.

All of the ones I've seen look virtually identical from the back (except for the model number sticker).

The main differences that I've found are:
  • Amp remote turn-on signal (10-pin socket pin #9) present only in cars that have a factory speaker amplifier (BRZ, and some Foresters with the harman/kardon system)
  • More recent models now have "aha".
  • Australian models don't include the parking guide lines when you're in reverse and they display the rear camera image.
  • Some Australian models have a second USB port, on the face of the HU (in addition to the normal port on the rear that is wired to a socket on the dash or in the armrest console).
  • Australian models probably don't have XM capability (but at least some do still have the same socket that US models use for the sat antenna. I don't know what that's for).

This might sound super ignorant- but this unit, or at least a version of it, is available for the 2014 wrx, which is what I own. Even if I bought that exact FT model would i still have to rewire everything? I guess I'm just surprised that there are that many differences like the usb and everything. Id think it would be more cost effective to use the same ports in all of them.

I just bought a 2014, my first subaru after owning 3 audis. I did not get the premium as there wasn't one available unless i really wanted to travel far (I drove two hours each way to get the one I have). I was hoping to put the OEM Navi in easily on my own and not spend the 2k+ the dealer wants. I want to stay as stock as possible. I figured I'd have to add the gps antenna and everything but I guess Im just surprised that all of the harnesses are THAT much different.

so- is there not a navi that is pretty much plug and play with my car? Im so lost and Ive been reading for about 5 days.

Unfortunately if you did not get the car with the OEM Navigation already installed you will have modify your harness to get it to work. Fortunately, SVXdc has now got almost everything you need to make this installation as easy as it can get. Contact him through his website at ae64.com and tell him what you're trying to do and he will be able to help you out. But I would still recommend going Aftermarket over the stock Navigation unless you can find the Stock one for a very good deal like I did. It's slow, the maps are out of date, no DVD playback, and low output power.

Finally installed my JBL MS-A1004 to power a set of JBL-MS62C component speakers and Infinity Kappa 63.9i. This amp is amazing. Super easy to set up. Connected to my FT unit without a LOC and the built in DSP accepted the line level input perfectly.

SVXdc,

Need your help please.

Just bought 2015 sti launch edition. Doesn't have the navi option and the dealer didn't really help me at all. Said they couldn't install it. Boooo

So I bought a Subaru navi (fa601us) from brz, hoping that I could just buy the harnesses I need, then plug and play. I though it was a dealer option and they would have that, but I'm told its factory only.

I'm not very good at electricals (figuring out what goes where), but good with my hands and following instructions so should be able to do it no problem.

The car already has a backup camera and I got the antenna with the radio. But the rest is a mess.
