Default So I almost insta-died today. (pics) (56k HOLY****!)

So, I decided to do some exploring today on my drive home from my hometown. I went down a dirt road that I had been on several times when I was a little bit younger. I knew the road fairly well, my dad had gone back there several times to hunt. So I felt pretty confident in my Alaskan navigation/rally skills.

So I'm going along at a good clip, maybe 55 mph. When I see this beautiful 4 right.

This is what it looked like:

I get slightly slideways and throw on my brake as hard as I can, because I then see this:

I stop like 20 feet from it, just barely in front of the "Road Closed!" sign. Apparently some crazy rain flood wiped out that section of road. It had to have been within the last year, because it wasn't there last time.

This isn't where I ended up stopping, but it shows how big the crack is in relation to the car. I backed up a tad bit to make sure the road wouldn't cave in underneath me.

Another shot from the river:

Thank god for ABS.

Dude you just learned a rule of vehicular operation.
Never ever bomb along an unfamiliar road.

You drove it with your dad when you were younger?!
Sheesh man...

As you see anything can happen in weeks muchless years.
Drive down an unfamiliar road slowly at first to learn it, as do the rally stars you're trying to imitiate. Then come back the opposite way at a quicker but measured clip to get familiar with surface conditions and any other surprises there might be.
After having driven it tiwce you may then bomb along with the comfort that you then do actually know the road.

Thank goodness you weren't hurt as that kind of drop & impact could have been the end of you (neck and/or spine snap upon impact) and your car.
Imagine how your dad would feel then.

The wing gave you enough downforce to apply your brakes and save you, I guess there is a point

Awww Janq cares about me

Actually, it is usually a well maintained road, in the "ROAD CLOSED" picture, you can see an antennae on the hill. That road is called "Alascom Drive." Alascom does all of our long distance up here, well, a good part of it. They have to do maintenance constantly to that antennae/station. So I figured hey, they need to get there sometime, it should be good to rally. I know better now

It was only about 3 miles off the glenn highway. It's tourist season, so there is always some german family trekkin' across Alaska in a Winnebago.
