Default Porsche 914 with subaru conversion

Hey guys,
I've been lurking here for about a year now while I have been working on my project. My project is a 1974 914 and I am putting a DOHC 2.5L subaru engine in the car. You can check out my progress here...


So, here is my question to you guys:

I have kind of dug myself into a hole, and I was hoping that you guys can help me get out, or at least guide me in the right direction. I purchased a JDM motor from a 96-98 Legacy, and 1998 forester. For some reason (my stupidity and lack of diligence) I ended up with an USDM ECU for a 1999 legacy. with that ECU I got the entire wiring harness. I had the wiring harness re-worked, stripping it down to the necessary components for running the engine and also had the necessary sensors faked out.

Now, when I got the harness back, and after the engine was in, I realized that only some of the sensors were there(the entire EGR system is not), thus leaving several connectors un-plugged. Which is when I realized my total clusterf$%& of a situation.

So, here is what I think are my two possible solutions. Let me know what you think and if there are other possible situations.

Situation 1:
As I have read here... the only real difference between the JDM and USDM is the intake manifold, which has the EGR system on it. So, can I get a USDM intake manifold and put it on the JDM block? If so, do I get a 1999 manifold, or a 1998 manifold? Do I have to drill into the block for the EGR pipe, or is it already there on the block? (i think it is, but im not 100% sure). By doing this I could keep the harness and ECU and only have to buy the intake... which looks like I can buy one for about $100-200.

Situation 2:
The other option would be to go with a standalone engine management system. This would be a custom EMS Stinger ECU with a custom harness done by the guys at Outfront Motorsports. With this system, I could keep my engine 100% JDM and have the harness built for my engine specifically. Also other advantages to this situation would be that I can run diagnostics, program different maps, all from my laptop. Also it can be upgraded as I upgrade.. turbo, different engine, etc. I will be able to use it for a while. The only con.... it would cost $1500.

That was a lot to read. But I thank you guys in advance for any input you have. Oh, by the way, I am also in the market for a 2004 WRX wagon!! I think subarus are great for everything!

stand alone, and put pistons and cams in it while you have the motor out.

sounds like the standalone is the way to go... it is just a lot of money that is the only drawback... and if my engine will work for <$200... it might be worth it.

Is swapping the intakes a 'sketchy' fix, or will it work solid like that?
