Default Audi S4: Compared to BMW 335i. S4 wins!

Quote:
The latest issue of Car and Driver has a nice comparison of the Audi S4 against the BMW 335i. No surprise the Audi S4 wins!
It's no secret that Car & Driver loves the BMW 3 series. The smaller BMW has been on the magazine's ten best list for as long as we can remember and very rarely has a version of the 3er lost a comparo in those pages (once to the B6 S4 BTW). So it was with great interest that we read this month's comparo between the repositioned S4 and the turbocharged 335i.

The article starts out by identifying a sweet spot in the performance sedan market. The elder V8 S4 had gone above the threshold of the sweet spot to a price greater than $50K though the elder E46 BMW M3 was still within reach of those willing to borrow. It would seem though that Audi is astute at model positioning gamesmanship and its all-conquering RS 4 called out BMW, helping Munich make the decision to take their M-car up market and well beyond $50K.

In comes the new S4, with all of the added kit befitting an S-car. With a new 3.0T supercharged six and aggressive pricing, the car now squares off against the less performance letter named 335i, which is the scene as Car & Driver raises the curtain.

Spoiler alert. The Audi wins. We're not surprisingly ecstatic. Read the whole article on pp. 72-81 of the Nov 2009 issue of Car & Driver or on their website when they get around to publishing the story there.

I read it. Does anyone else agree with comparing the two? (as stated in CD article)

The prices are similar but shouldn't the s4 be compared against the m3?

The first three paragraphs explain why they choose this comparo.. Also, the S4 base is $4,360 less then 08 base S4.

The article should be online soon. It did not really make sense to me, how they came to their conclusion.

O.K., I found my mag... They said the M3 is 56,975, 335 is 41,125 so it's 300 twin turbo inline six is the S4's new lower priced doppelganger. But watch the small print because the BMW does not match the S4 in standard equipment ( then they go own to explain all the extra's and how they compare)..

the 135i just lost to the TTS as well in Road and Track. But the 135 and 335 both have more potential than the Audi's they compete against. The 135 and 335 are set up very conservatively from the factory. The aftermarket potential with those cars is amazing. Better motor with tons of potential power, RWD and better front/rear distribution. If i didn't have two young kids, the 135 would be my next car.

Ah I see, well I would expect to pay more for a comparably eqiupped BMW if i were shopping for them. I think the S4 is between 335 and M3. It's an odd place to be I think.

Pricing aside they're not the same type of car, really. I think the only reason the prices are similar is because they've watered down the S4 for the upcoming MY and the M3 has gotten more expensive.

Well, the new S4 has about all the bells & whistles that one should need, even with the base model. Seems the way to go is just opt for the manual with the sports diff and call it a day. This keeps the price comparable with the 335 series.

And while the 335 is very nice, you don't even get an LSD. No... then it might just impinge on M3 performance too much.

They should have compared it to the 335xi instead, but otherwise it's a good comparo, that's audi's target car.

Looks wise, the Audi has lost it's edge. Just seem dull.

In all fairness, the S4 never really had an edge looks-wise. This is probably the most exciting looking one yet, if only for the LEDs in the headlights and the semi-aggressive front-end.

really?!? I guess to each is own. I personally think that Audi makes some of the best looking cars on the road today... the A5/S5 arguably the best looking on the road today.

I can see some validity in the comparison. The Audi is a better equipped car. Too bad about the aesthetics--such as the tacky, pretentious headlight LEDs that completely lack the elegance of BMW's more subdued halos. Including the A5/S5 and A4/S4, Audi makes some of the most mundane looking cars on the road today, though I am sure that in time that poster who claims to understand how the golden ratio applies to aesthetics (apparently based on something he read in an Audi brochure) will post his evidence proving that Audis are gorgeous. All that aside, the article was surprisingly fair. Audi is a better buy for those for whom looks have absolutely no bearing on their purchase decisions.

The A4 series of cars needs to be seen to appreciated. Pictures do not capture the perspective of the cars lines.Case and point. I was thinking the A4 was looking pretty dull, then a guy in my building bought one and its simply stunning.

Here's a clue. Cars do not need huge fender flares to look aggressive and have a wonderful flow to them. Audi has figured this out quite well.

I prefer the styling of the B6 & B& A4's to the current generation, and the looks of the current 3-series over the current too-big-for-its-britches A4. Think comparing the 335xi with AWD would have been a better direct matchup. No doubt that Audi kills BMW on the interior tho!

I'll let y'all know in a couple weeks how the S4 handles on the track

I happened to be two cars behind a last-gen S4, and right beside a brand new A4, on the way to work today. The new one still looks a bit odd, but new cars are always like that, at least for me. Audi has yet to disappoint me, with their aesthetics - I find them beautiful.

I do find the 335 comparison more fair, even though ideally, it should be S4 vs. M3. It's just that the S4 has never had the gusto to be a true M3 performance competitor; that distinction has indeed been for the RS4.

IT should NOT be s4 vs. m3.. AWD sedan with approximately 300 hp in the BMW line-up, comparable size, is the 335xi..

Then what do you compare the RS4 to? The BMW MM3?

Edit: redundant post is redundant

S4 is definitely not a competitor for the M3, don't let the "S" badge or lack of an "M" badge on the 335i fool you, these two cars are quite evenly matched

New S4 is really nice, looks pretty good in the flesh.
