Here's another video from a few weekends ago when I was at the track. This is before it started raining and we decided to get sideways. I'm only in the video once at around the 2:00 mark. Check it out!

It was fun! I can't wait to get onto the real road course! Signed up for a track day in a month I am toping to get a Go Pro for myself soon. Any suggestions on the best place to mount it? Hopefully I'll get it early enough that I can try a few mounting options on the street and see what I like best.

Last time I went out I mounted it on the passenger's side of the mirror on the windshield. I used the inverted setting and put it towards the top of the window. I think when we go out in 3 weeks I am going to switch up where I mount it for each new set of lap. This way it will make for a more interesting video when I edit down the footage. I may even do a rear view mount.... it will all depend on what the group that I am stuck with is like. |

Yeah, I'm planning to get one of the newer ones. I was watching the GoPro video from Pike's Peak and trying to decide which angle I liked best:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=7VAJaZAV-gQ (Hopefully that's the correct video). They had GoPro's all over the car. I know you usually mount yours inside, but I think that low on the front bumper looks the coolest to me. On the roof looks pretty cool too. I also like the rear mounted view and the driver/cluster view. Maybe I need a 4 Go Pro's.... LOL. I'll probably just mount it in a different spot for each session. That seems like a good plan. |

Yeah I really wish I had a sun roof. Last time we went Tim had his mounted on his sun roof, upside down. He was able to see his shifts, windshield and gauge cluster. I really like the side view of the car too, where you can see the wheels. I am a fan of attaching my GoPro suction cup mount to glass, I don't know how I feel about the body of the car yet. I would hate to see if fly off @ 120MPH and even worse, hit someone's M5 or M3 that I don't have money to repair. I know the glass works good, I have tested it I would love to have 2 mounted on my car, that way I always have a rear and forward facing camera. It is nice to be able to see passing and getting passed through the turns. |

Yeah, glass seems like it would be the ideal for mounting a suction cup. I'm not sure how they were all mounted on the Pike's Peak car, though. They didn't look like they were all onto glass, but maybe they were hard mounted. I think we had some of them stuck onto bumpers and hoods when we were at DCTC and they did fine. You'll have to ask Erik to find out where he actually had them all.
I like the idea of front and rear at all times, but I also like seeing the gauge cluster. I think it's hard to get a sense of speed from a video, and the speedo helps with that. I don't know how to overlay two videos together anyways, so there really isn't any point in having that many angles, lol. I'll probably just do a different mounting position for each session. |

Either way I am also going to run the multiple angles. FYI - when you buy your GoPro, 32GB, Class 10 Card that I picked up. http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-Class-Flash-Memory-TS32GSDHC10/dp/B003P3MCXW/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1336399095&sr=1-4 |

Maybe we can borrow some more Go Pro's from the NF guys again If we do get a lot of footage, and Erik doesn't come along, I'll have to work on my editing skills. I really haven't given it much effort other than Windows Movie Maker.
Also, wow, HD card prices have dropped like crazy. I bought a Sandisk 32GB SD card for the G12 back in July. It wasn't even a Class 10 and it cost $60! I just checked and it's $30 now. I was just going to use that card, but if it's only $30 for a 32GB now, I might as well get another... |

How much video can you get on a 32GB card? And how long does the battery last?

For the GoPro Hero 2
Shoot 8+ hrs of HD Video with 32GB SD Card (SD Card NOT INCLUDED) Media saved to SD card, up to 32GB capacity (SDHC). Average recording times using a 32GB card: 1080p @ 30 FPS = 4 hours 960p @ 30 FPS = 6 hours 720p @ 60 FPS = 4 hours 720p @ 30 FPS = 9 hours WVGA @ 120 FPS = 4.5 hours SDHC Memory: Up to 32GB (Class 4 or higher. Class 10 is required for photo every 0.5 second time-lapse.) SD Card not included. |

Yeah, I was just looking that up. Looks like a little over 4hrs with a 32GB card on full HD. I think that would be enough recording time for me. Derek - Please let me know if you don't think that's enough.
Based on reading reviews, it looks like the 2.5hr battery life that GoPro claims is very optimistic. Most people are reporting around an hour and a half. That means I would need 3 batteries to be able to fill a 32GB card. I will probably end up getting this battery kit: http://www.amazon.com/Wasabi-Power-Battery-Charger-AHDBT-001/dp/B005NC8BF6/ They also sell those generic batteries separately for $9 each: http://www.amazon.com/Wasabi-Power-Battery-AHDBT-001-Cameras/dp/B005I6BSRA/ Derek - Let me know if you want me to order one for you when I order the GoPro. I have Amazon Prime, so there wouldn't be any shipping cost. |

I will be running the 720p 60fps - I have had good results using this setting. Also I finally figured out what Sony Vegas settings I need to run the 720p 60fps.
I think you will need more batteries. I feel weird buying an aftermarket battery for the GoPro. I guess I will read some reviews and see what people say. The event is going to be all day. I would think that 4 hours would be enough time.... I guess that is what I am stuck with When are you going to order your batteries? I will know what I can afford after I pick up my helmet this week. It should be in prior to Friday. |

Ben, the best spot for the gopro IMO like someone mentioned is the sunroof. Here's my buddy's install

^ yeah Ben and I both have the base WRX. No sunroof.
Ben, reviews look good. Only 1 negative review for both links. I think I'll pick up an extra battery. Hit me up we can talk about when you are going to get them. I'll have enough money for 1 battery for sure. |

Xluben,
Sorry to butt in, from my experience with generic lithium batteries for my Samsung HD camera, they do not last nearly as long as the OEM Samsung battery. Even though the generic batteries have the same mAh they just don't last AS long. Since video footage is priceless =p you don't want to loose any. Not sure how much OEM batteries are but it may be worth sticking with them OR better. The more mAh the longer it will last. Just my experience. |

Like you said, a lot of the generic ones actually have higher capacity (mAh's), so they end up lasting longer, but I've always found them to last at least as long. My still camera's can get up to 100k shots/year, so they're certainly seeing a lot of use. I guess it's more of a crap shoot with generic batteries (I'm sure there are some duds out there), but I've had good luck in the past. |

^ the reviews of these batteries seem to be very positive. I was a bit cautious about using a non-OEM battery as well. However, $8 for aftermarket which has reviews saying better than OEM (GoPRo) or $20 for a GoPro one. I'll try out the $8 with my battery that came with the Hero2.

Also if you are using Movie Maker, it won't matter. I think you have to convert the raw video (from what I have read). |

BUT since that's not even an option on the Go Pro it probably doesn't really matter what I use. I shoot at 720p on the G12 and those videos look fine. In fact, I'm sure that 99% of my YouTube followers don't even know the difference. I just looked into the Movie Maker issue. It sounds like the new Movie Maker on Windows 7 will edit the files, but it might not look right because the GoPro video isn't true 1080p (or 720p), because it's not widescreen. I guess I'll have to play with it more once I get the camera. Maybe I'll have to make the jump to a real video editor... Me too, lol. |
