Default to build! or not to build?

im thining about my future plans and ive talked to a few people now i want some more opinions. i want to find an engine to build 2.5 of course. so hers the question(s). short block or long block and also i heard the forester and the sti 2.5 are the same true or not? and if they arent then would it matter which one i started with? thanks for any input.

Don't feel like listing your planned mods but you want advice on them...interesting. What exactly do you want us to say? From your post I think you could really use some more reading...a longblock is a shortblock with the heads attached...you need heads. If you're asking what shortblock you should use with what heads you should probably list what your options are...

or, to start, list what mods you already have and what you'd like to use it(track, auto-x, etc.) for and how much power you would like to make on pump and/or race gas, and how much you have to spend.

dont plan on using it for anything i just want to build it. maybe i will hit the dyno a few times. and money isnt an issue this is going to be an ongoing project its not getting done in a time frame.

1.are the forester and sti block the same?

2.are the heads from the sti worth using or should i find a better set?

3.if not the sti heads the what heads are better?

if you still need a list of mods:
perrin gt30r or gt35r kit(uppipe,downpipe,intake w/bigmaf)<~~with kit
FMIC
Fuel pump walbro255
inj.(not sure on size depends on which kit i pick)
perrin fuel rails
hydra ems
Wiseco forged pistons
rods(TBD)
P.E. timing belt
TGV deletes(DIY version)
blitz nur spec r catback(already have)
oil cooler
koyo radiator
cant think of anything else right now but its a start.

You'll want the EJ257 block (extra ribbing, STI). Block only is like $800-900 new. With pistons, rods, and crank it's $1700-1800 new. If you use the Perrin rails + Hydra maybe you can switch to low impedence injectors (a la RC). If you are using the Hydra, the BigMAF is superfluous. The STI heads are not bad. Cosworth has some new heads out for the STI and then there are the various hand port jobs from Axis, DPR, Crawford. JDM Spec C head are an option too.

Start by reading a ton more.
