Why you want Manual? Not like they are sports cars here.

That last Wrangler with white wheels is sweet. I'd rock that in a second...only if it's a manual.

That is a good point. And an auto would be a nice in this town.

I just hope I can get close to what KBB estimated my car's worth from Carmax. I'm not getting my hopes up, though. I don't have a problem with doing a private sale but I'd love to avoid the hassle.

Alright, I contacted that seller to let them know they have an interested party. Hopefully they'll provide some better pics.

the only worry that i have about it is that its obvious ( from pics) that he's towed a camper with it.

The blower motor is easy to swap out. not a big deal. you can grab one from any jeep of that era at a junk yard for cheap.

you'll ditch the swampers fairly quickly.

You'll be thankful for that auto trans in traffic. and it will help you learn throttle control in rocks , not to mention it will give you a much better crawl ratio if you choose not to upgrade gear with tires.

Thanks man. How much stress would that camper put on the car?

He just sent me a grip of pics and the thing looks great.

if he's not running a trans cooler or servicing the trans regularly, the clutches might be a little cooked or the convertor might need to be replaced. I highly doubt he could mess up the shell or the valvebodies in that trans with that camper. it looks to be a featherweight from the pics. if could also cause some extra wear on the limited slip in the rear axle if it has one.

I had an 04 with that trans ( cant remember the code for it) , but it was short wheelbase. i liked it alot.

that jeep most likely has a d44 in the rear, but you may want to ask him to take a pic of the rear axle. I wouldnt let on at what you're looking for. IIRC if it was a sport that year , it had a d44. they also did some goofy editions ( columbia and rocky mountain) that came with the d44 rear too.

that looks to be the header/exhaust. not such a big deal. looks like it may need new control arm bushings and definitely needs some swaybar quick disconnects!

for all of the supposed "wheeling" that he did, i see very little in the way of scraping/scars on the underside of it.

the swampers are also pretty beat. it needs tires. they also look like they're bias. you'll want radials.

I love those Garvin Wilderness racks. I had one on my TJ, now I have one on my XJ. Solid, solid racks. I've seen people winched over by them with no damage, but I don't recommend it.

That thing looks really nice. Seconded on the D44, don't buy a D35 Wrangler, I made that mistake!

Can we tell from the provided pic if it is in fact a D44?

back up there slugger!

go look at it first.

Drive it. listen for sounds. squeeks mean ungreased or worn bushings - deduct $250.

check the oil pan, trans pan, etc. any dents , dings, bruises to the pans, deduct $500.

The tires? deduct $250. 5 BFG ATs should run you in the neighborhood of $800 mounted, balanced, etc in a 31 x 10.50.

check the rear axle, if it isnt a dana 44, deduct $250.

take a look at all of the body bushings, suspension bushings, tie rod ends - if any look worn enough to need replacement, deduct $250.

If the brakes need to be replaced, deduct $500.

get underneath, wiggle the driveshafts, if the ujoints are bitched, deduct $100.

what i'm trying to get at is, look at as much as you can.

If you can, jack the front wheels up , grab the top and bottom of the tire and push the top in while pulling the bottom out and vice versa. if it wiggles, it needs balljoints. This isnt such a big deal for the home mechanic, but if you have to drop it off to one to get it done, it can get stupid expensive. same goes for the unit bearings.

check for any fluid leaks too.

that's the front axle dude!

I cant see enough of the rear pumpkin to tell in the provided pics.

in the one pic it looks like the axle tubes are too skinny for a d44, but that could be the shadows. The pumpkin also looks to be a d35 shape.

You're the man! Looks like I have my work cut out for me.

I'm going to ask if he has a pic of the rear.

Thanks.

I don't know what you can tell from these but they were in the original pic haul. Terrible, I know.

I've requested that he take some better ones.

Signature loan = no lien

I don't want some piece of **** that needs several thousand in maintenance right off the bat. The one I want already has the headgasket done, PHH, and the axles have been gone through as well if I remember correctly.

I won't buy one unless it's clean and well maintained(with records).

I think my baseline and fixing on the 80 that I bought ran me a total of 3100 and change, but that's a little above and beyond the norm. I put in a 2wd kit, new shafts/birfs and had new driveshafts made with CVs instead of the stock style as mine was lifted beyond shims.

Headgasket, look for another $1500 in parts and labor. Rebuilding the head is optional but that's another $300 right there if you want it perfect.

Cooling system in the 80s are old. Most owners neglect them. A full overhaul which can cost another $500 in just parts alone. This is a DIY. Not hard at all.

AC, prepare your angus. I am leaving mine broken. I ain't ready to tackle the **** show just yet.

Power steering, PHH, fan clutch, e-brake, these are also other know failures mostly because of age. Crap adds up. But once it is all sorted out, it's a great truck to own....well, besides the 12mpg.
Like I said I'm not buying the cheapest one I can find, I'm buying one that's ready to go.

I've been keeping an eye in the classifieds on mud and I've been reading everything I can. I know what to look for and I'm not going to settle on just any old truck. You guys have to realize I'm coming from german vehicles, this **** isn't new to me.

Looks like a d35 from that angle. To be sure id need to see the cover on the pumpkin from the rear or see the vin tag.

Also ask him what the gear ratio is.
