An official third driver is typically under contract, but I would bet they usually have an out for an offered race seat.

Yeah. The F1 cars are definitely faster this year with the tire and aero changes, but last year's cars weren't that much faster than the Porsche 919's that Hartley has been driving. I don't recall why I was comparing lap times, but I did a few months ago. At Spa, Silverstone, COTA, etc. the 919's wouldn't have finished last in the F1 field. If he can come to terms with the grip and speed increase in this year's cars he might do well. Of course he also has to watch out for everyone else. He may very well get caught up in Grosjean having another failure and wreck, or perhaps find himself in the middle of a Perez/Ocon bumper-car battle.

The Russian has missed the last two races after being dropped in favour of Pierre Gasly. But, after Carlos Sainz left for Renault and Gasly heads back to Japan to compete in the Super Formula finale, Kvyat finds himself back on the Formula 1 grid. However, Gasly will return for next weekend's grand prix in Mexico and there is said to be no guarantee that Kvyat will keep the other Toro Rosso seat for the three remaining races after the US. Le Mans winner Hartley has been drafted in this weekend, but could extend his stay and freeze out Kvyat once again if he impresses at the Circuit of The Americas. Toro Rosso have also yet to decide on who will form their 2018 driver line-up, but Kvyat's outlook looks a particularly bleak one. |

The two-time world champion's new deal was finally made official on Thursday ahead of the United States Grand Prix, after months of speculation about his future. It was believed Alonso wanted a one-year extension in order to be available for when other possibilities open up after 2018 following three frustrating seasons at McLaren-Honda. However, the Spaniard insisted he has committed to a multi-year agreement with the Woking squad, which will be powered by Renault engines next year after parting ways with Honda. When asked if the deal was just for 2018, Alonso said: "No. We never discuss the contract clauses and we are not going to do it now, but it's a long-term contract and we'll see how things go. "But I'm very excited for next year, with different expectations, and keen to put McLaren back where it deserves to be. I want Australia to arrive already." The McLaren driver said he had carefully examined all the options available before deciding to stay at the British squad, in what he labelled a "cautious process". "We weren't in a hurry, neither of us," he said. "From the first moment I believed that McLaren's project - or at least the chassis side - had taken the right step in terms of aerodynamics and in terms of mechanical grip. "We left all doors open, I talked to everybody who wanted to talk, with all the different projects I had on the table, but the most convincing one was McLaren's. "They had their own particular situation with the engine: they needed to decide if they were sticking with Honda or changing supplier. "In the end they decided to change supplier and move to Renault and we had to wait a few more weeks to have all the information about the engine that I wanted. "But now it was time to make a decision and the decision is to stay with them because I think we can be very competitive next year." Alonso, who won his two titles with the Renault team in 2005 and 2006, admitted re-uniting with the French manufacturer will be special for him. "It's very exciting. Driving again for Renault, even though it's just the engine, is a good feeling. "Red Bull has been showing it this year, with two cars on the podium in Japan, both cars on the podium in Malaysia, so we know what the Renault engine is capable of. Now we have to step up and make it happen." No Indy 500 The Spaniard, who made his debut in the Indianapolis 500 this year, said he will not be racing in the event in 2018 due to the clash with the Monaco Grand Prix, which he skipped this season. "Obviously now with the new McLaren deal for next year I can confirm that I will not be in the Indy 500 next year, because it is Monaco GP the same weekend and the priority next year is to perform well in F1. "But at the same time I will confirm that I will be in the Indy 500 in the future. Whether it will be 2019 or 2020, whenever, it is a race that I definitely will experience again." |

I wish they'd do away with the whole 4-engines/year thing. It's supposed to be about saving money. In F1 any 'saving money' excuse falls kind of flat. While we're changing things, I have a couple more suggestions: DRS. I can't see what this adds to the show. There are rules about disallowing 'driver aids', so that the driver has to use his own skills more. DRS just makes the lead driver a sitting duck. What driver skill is involved in pressing the DRS button? I'd get rid of it, or change the rule so that any driver could use it at any time. Fuel. Increase the allotment. The situation is better than a couple years ago, but the drivers still have to spend time saving fuel in order to make the race distance. That happened to Kimi yesterday. It's one of the reasons Vestappen caught him so quickly. |

Hell of a GP, considering I figured the action was over twice early on.. First after Lewis got by Vettel, then after Lewis' stop as he stayed ahead.
Lot's of action after that though. On Max... Damn, it's hard to give a decisive opinion but he did have all four off with a tire in the grass to boot. If there was another lap, I'm fairly convinced that he would have needed to give the position back. But, since it was the end of the last lap and for a podium, that's how it had to go down. Incredible move, and super exciting, but with Kimi's tires more or less toast I think he could have waited for a sec and got him before the end. Of course, this is all mute if he was literally 5" to the left on the pass. Track limits were super loose (wish it was that loose on F1 2k17), but where it was, and to gain a position on the last lap for a podium I'll stand by it being the correct call. It has really sucked to watch Ferrari / Vettel's title hopes fall apart in the 2nd half, but you gotta give credit where credit is due to Lewis and MBZ.. It's over. |
