Default gc8 sti ver6 transmission and diff into 04 wrx

After posting a thread in the wrong forum and not reading the stickies (sorry unabomber) I finally have a more qualified question to ask the transmission forum.

I have an 04 wrx with shot 3rd gear. I've been doing some research and now I want to go jdm gc8 sti ver6 trans and rear diff on my 04. My question is will this be a direct swap? If not what will I need to make it work? Are my axles, drive shaft and rear axles gonna fit?

From my research, everything should be plug and play, but I might have to swap the speed sensor for my 04. Anyone with experience in this?

I'm doing more research and the speed sensor is iffy. Some say you can swap the electronic sending unit and leave the speedo in the tranny and some say to replace the speedo which requires seperation of the case (which I don't want to do).

Anyone know anymore on this also?

its should be a bolt-on affair, nothing should need to be changed.

are the final drives the same. if so then your speedo should be fine.. though i swapped from a 4.44 auto in which my speed was off 4mph at 60 to a 5mt 4.11 and my speed was spot on then. so your only looking at a 4mph diff. unless its 3.9 then i have no clue.

Thanks for the info! This really helps a lot, everyone!

So I won't have any issue with the rear axles? The ver6 just sold out, but I got the ver4 which seems almost identicle, anyone see any issue in this?

So I got the transmission in, the rear diff out and now I'm sort of stuck. I am unsure of the wrx rear axles. I know the wrx axles will not fit the new rear diff, but I have the inner cv joints that will fit, but I'm not sure that the wrx axle shafts and races were ment to fit this inner cv housing from the ver 4 sti.

Anyone know about this type of hybrid axle setup? I searched around and most people are talking about hybrid axles and suberdave races for the R180 rear, but my rear is off a ver4 which isn't R180.

Got the boot off the STI rear cv joint housings and looks like the race might be the same as the WRX! The splines count 22 and should be the same on the WRX also from my research so far, also their are 6 bearings. The shafts look about the same diameter, but I have yet to take apart the WRX rear cv joint housing, but I'll do this when I get home.

I hope they are the same, in which case I can use the STI CV housings on my rear WRX axles and plug them into the STI diff. Wish me luck

Swap the lsd from your wrx diff into the jdm diff, then the axles will fit.

Can't do th
Is because the tranny is 4.44 final drive and the sti diff matches it. Anyway, it worked! The cv joints are the same as the wrx so I was able to slip on the cv inner housings and they fit like stock.

Now all that's left is install front axles, downpipe n intercooler, fill up the trans n diff fluid (75w 90) and take her for a spin.

I've been driving on it for a while now. Works great, shorter gears, screams on the highway due to always being in the best RPM range for exceleration.

80 mph is about 3.7K rpms has that evo 8 lsd humm when excelerating

What he meant was take the differential out of each of the carrier s, swap over the ring gear from your 4.444 over to your WRX VLSD and then install the diff carrier back into your car. This way you can keep your axles as they are.

Or you could have just grabbed a rear diff from an auto Forester NA, Outbacks since they are 4.444 and be done. This 4.444 final drive isn't only found in Japan. However it's a R160 diff.

Thank you for the clarification. I'm new to WRX's and rear diffs. I'd rather just use my axle stubs and make a hybrid axle since that was easier and no draw backs from it. I had the parts already with my tranny so there would be no reason to do it the harder way, but it's nice to know that is an option. I knew about the forester diff, but like I said, I had the parts to do it and wanted to try it before I ruled it out and went the other route.
