To those who've had wheel bearings replaced
My second car, a *gasp* '98 Ford Explorer is making a whining noise, that speeds up as I accelerate. It sounds like it's coming from the front, right wheel. Does this sound like a bad bearing to you?
Thanks, Ed

IME, if it's a bearing it should get louder and quieter as you load/unload either side of the car around corners. My belief is that the bad bearing gets louder when loaded (so turning to the left would make a right side bearing louder). This was confirmed after I took someone else's advice and wound up replacing three wheel bearing to find the one bad one in an old Aud 4000q.
Good luck. |

Hmmm, maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree.
When starting from a stop, in a straight line, it gets louder/faster up to about 40, when road noise drowns it out. I was hoping to take it to a small shop instead of the dealer, as the warranty just ran out (of course). Thanks for the tip! Ed (Ford continues to get the :monkey: ) |

Ed, it should be a simple job. I don`t believe they are pressed on I might be wrong but it should be a case of just cleaning up the old one and changing it out. Unless its got to badly damaged and gouged into the spindle its self.
Cost will be minimal. I guess about an hour to do it. Id do it for free its that simple. Yeah Ive done loads in my past, tractors, vans, mini's, cavaliers, escorts you name it. Lee. |

Ed,
if your bored and feel like freezeing you ass off, jack the truck up so the wheel is off the ground. If you place your hands at 12 and 6 o'clock on the tire, and push/pull on the wheel, it should not have lots of "play". If it does, and wobbles around a bit, the brearing is probably bad. Not to discount what Wheels said, but I have a feeling the job is a bit more involved since you have (I am assuming you do) an AWD Ford Explorer, or a "push button/auto-locking hub" 4WD one. I would think the bearing is pressed into the hub or spindle, but I am not sure. If you place your hand at 3 and 9 o'clock and have play, it sometimes means something in the steering linkage is worn, but excessive play is bad. <--- sounds funny Paul G<-Says trade it in for a Forrester! Wait, you have one, dirve it off a cliff! |

Ed, I had the same problem on my 97 Explorer. Come to find out it was just the 4 wheel drive transfer case that had to be replaced cause it was stripped out. Damn Fords!

This one's not AWD. I'm not real excited about jacking this POS up and checking, maybe it will warm up to 50 tomorrow! Ed |

Well, if it is not AWD or 4WD (why have the f-in thing-? ), then Wheels is correct. It will probably have an inner and outer wheel bearing w/ races that are go inside the brake rotor/hub, and a wheel bearing seal or some sort. It should not be too big of a deal then I would think.
Good luck.. (read: trade it in) Paul G. |

Well, there's a long story behind it....basically, I got it for free, and am holding it for my Mom to drive the 2 times a year she's in the US (she teaches English in China).
Can't trade it, have to keep it running (she likes it ). Ed |

Most domestic 4wd SUVs currently on the US market have a hub and bearing assembly, where the bearing is part of the hub and cannot be replaced alone. Expect something in the $300 range for the part.
