Default 2012 Bmw M5 to get twin-turbocharged V8

Quote:
BMW’s M division has officially announced that the next-generation M5 will be powered by a twin-turbocharged V8. It has long been rumored that this division is moving away from large engines to smaller, forced-induction designs. In an interview with German publication Auto News, M GmbH boss, Dr. Kay Segler, confirmed this development but didn’t give specific details on the engine itself.

However, there is speculation that it will be a retuned version of the twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V8 used in both the X5 M and X6 M. When used in these crossovers, the eight-cylinder delivers 555hp.

However, sources say that the engine will be tweaked to generate about 575hp for the M5 and the upcoming M6 coupe. Segler implied that BMW was creating two cars in one with the new M5. He mentioned that one will be a sedate daily driver and the other persona will be an absolute monster on the track. Many believe that some of the configurable engine, transmission, and powertrain controllers found in the M5 are used in the car.

There are also those who think that the M5 and M6 will both receive an F1-inspired kinetic energy recovery system (KERS). The system can restore energy that is typically lost during braking. At the push of a button, the driver gets an added 100hp boost.

The new M5’s transmission options have yet to be disclosed but there are old reports that say that the V-8 will probably be coupled with a dual-clutch transmission, allowing the blasting off shifts in a fraction of a second. The existing M5 is offered with a seven-speed sequential gearbox, or a six-speed manual transmission.

There have already been spy pics of the DSG and KERS was discussed in detail - brakes on the mules have also been monstrous. The biggest question I have is whether the motor will be identical to all the other 4.4TT motors save for boost, or if it will be special in some way. Also of concern is the weight of the new model - will it be under 4K lbs...

If so on both counts I may get one, but I'm keeping my V10 - even if it just sits in the garage - something tells me it will be a muscle car of the past some day. Besides, it has depreciated 70K over 4 yrs

I love that everyone is going forced induction. Better mpg's on paper, but much better performance after a visit to a tuner and your favorite aftermarket shop.

I like the idea of twin turbo V8, the aftermarket will probably love it too. What’s up with the weird cameo? Why put swirly sticker all over the car, it does not seem to hide much in terms of details to the design and it probably makes everyone within a block stare at it as it goes by.

How many miles do you have on your car? I've only seen E60's loose $40-50k from new.

2006 Sticker 97K + tax and BS ~110K
35K Miles
Offered 33K from BMW San Fran to trade for new Alpina B7

So realistically can get perhaps 40K from private party - but I like the car, and it certainly drives like a lot more than 40K, so I'm going to hold onto it - maybe put a couple thousand miles a year on it.

Jesus.

I forgot how quickly BMWs can go from base sticker price to $20k over sticker.

I agree with keeping the car at that point. My mom has an '01 XKR coupe, that she bought new. KBB value is in the mid teens, the car was over $90k new (plus tax, etc). So she is just enjoying the car, because it's pointless for her to sell it, since there's really not many other cars that can touch it for the price.

If there is no MT option than it isn't an M and it might as well be AMG.

BMW is making some real strides in efficiency here, which is great, but they need to get weight under control. The new 550 weighs in at almost 4200 lbs. I figured in 2010 we would be starting to shed lbs.

Yup, they are great bargains for those looking for a do it all mobile. The only visible wear mine has is a soft side bolster on the driver's seat from getting in/out. Re-dye the seat and the car is like new with 35K on the clock. No point in trading it. I am 90% sure I am going to do the Gintani SC when it comes out - 10lbs with meth for over 700WHP and then drive it much less.

Precisley why the 1 series came out IMO. Every new iteration gets bigger, heavier etc. With most car manu's... that's why they start a new small platform. They want to be able to say "bigger, more legroom, headroom" etc. to keep selling the cars.... been this way for decades...

As much as I love the E9x M3's, they are tanks in comparison to even the E46's..

I wonder how much the economy plays into this? Less people these days have a lot of disposable income. There are also fewer people that can afford to purchase a car like that so naturally your buyers pool will be smaller and the price will need to come down to offload it. It sucks for those who buy new!

Oof, that's harsh.

Good friend/co-worker of mine's dad owns a 2007 Merc SL500.

Not sure of the exact sticker price new (one night sitting in it wasn't enough to jot down the option list), but in the six figure range. Took it to a dealership to get a quote on trade in, and was offered a hot $30k for it.

Didn't see mileage, but its always lived with occasional use in and around Dallas, so can't be that high.

I think most people anticipated the twin-turbo V8, what with both BMW and Audi downsizing the number of cylinders in their performance models (i.e. S4 going back to V6 from V8, etc.). The V10 certainly did sound nice, though.

Looking forward to reading about it!

There's tons of info on E90post forums all over the place...

Basically, they'll take either the N54 TT or use the new N55 and add another turbo...

A lot of true "///M" folks are pissed because it won't be the typical high revving N/A offering they're used to. Me? I love it in my 135i... I run circles around those N/A cars...

It seems TT6 is just about confirmed, but I was expecting 2 cylinders lopped off of the new M5 motor, meaning TT V6, not I6. Did some quick searching and didn't see anything definitive. If you have any confirmation on I6 please shoot it my way.
