Talking New to Subaru, Loving it so far!

Hi everyone! About a month ago I decided it was time to replace my trusty Ford Ranger after almost 13 years and 275,500 miles of trouble free service. It was simply wearing out. I had a running list of stuff that would soon need attention and it was beginning to add up to a car payment. As you can imagine, over time my life has change dramatically. In the last 4 years alone I got married to my wonderfull wife, bought a house (in April 2006), and we now have 3 kids . My family deserves as much of my time as I have to give, not to have dad spending weekends under the truck. SOOO I set about finding a replacement.

I commute 110mi a day mostly 4 lane highway, so I wanted a little more efficency than my truck. Something with good safety, manual trans, and fun to drive. In all my searching (including here) Subaru, Mazda, and Mitsubishi consistantly were at the top of the compact catagory in fun to drive and all had pretty good safety. I drove them and also considered other compacts like Ford Focus and Dodge Caliber. Keep in mind I am comparing all N/A cars, I can't afford insurance on the turbos.

Most of them had a couple traits that bugged me. I really hate that feel of FWD under acceleration known as torque stear, enough so that I was considering something other than a compact to get RWD and MT. The only one that did not have this of course was the Subaru with AWD. Most of the cars also seemed to have torque curves without a lot of lower rpm power, or off the off idle grunt (comming from a V6 pickup) The Subaru had the most power of the lot with what felt like the broadest torque curve. I owned a old VW beetle for a time, so the Boxer engine has a familier feel as well.

So I kinda was leaning torward the Impreza already. When I went to the dealer to look at the one 2.5i 5spd in the area, I discovered it was a price leader from the previous weekend that had not sold, and was marked $1600 below sticker, not bad for a 2.5i base. They had a great lease offer on it, that if I buy the residual out (at 24k mi/yr I will be buying it) at the end, yielded a total of payments less than if I financed at 3.9%!! I am now a very pleased Impreza owner. It has rained like crazy on and off here for the last few weeks, and I love my Impreza even more. With my truck, I literally had to drive 50 in the rain because on the country highway I drive, there are low spots, bad drainage and washouts that very quickly lead to hydroplaning. And pulling away from a stop I had to leave a lot of space for one wheel burnouts. Now I just point and go, it's wonderfull!!

I have always been a part of online communities for products I own, though I read more than I post. I am happy to be a Subie owner, a member of this community, and am looking for many years of good service from my car, hopefully as much as my truck gave me.

I already completed my first "Mod". Got rid of the lousy base 4spkr stereo and replaced it with a nice DDIN Kenwood and some Infinity Reference components. Thanks to this site, that process was very smooth!

Welcome to the Subaru family! You should have taken your truck to shoot a commercial for Ford.
