I have blue console light & footwell illumination. I thought it would be nice to have red one for shifter accent for nice contrast. I have all the materials I need but I still didn't figure out where to mount it... Whoever did this mod on 09 please share your knowledge

I just found this tonight...AWESOME I'm totally going to do it.

Where is a good place to tap in? I don't want to do the illumination on the clock; that seems like too much to run. The radio is about the same. Could you just tap into something in the fuse box? It's right under the dash so i figure it'd be easy. Are there specific circuits for illumination? I'm a mechanic guy...I don't do electricity to well. =)

Not to thread jack but I put some LEDs under my window controls and they look pretty cool, I was going to originally do it like the OP and put LED's shining down from the Handle on the roof, but I figured that My arm or something would block the light most of the time so I went from the bottom up and it turned out cool, you cant see anything out of the ordinary in the day time either.... and it shines up on the chrome door handle also

Maybe I need something like this on my shifter also.....

I had a question about resistors. I ordered some leds to do this mod and wasn't sure what I needed. The plan is for 1 5mm led. I ordered a few of the ones below from superbrightleds.com

RL5-R5015 Red LED

RL5-R2415 Red LED

I tried this earlier with an led from radio shack but it didn't work. I ran a wiring harness and tapped the power from the same place my defi gauges do. Ground to ground and positive to the illumination wire, so the led would turn on with the lights. Assuming that all that wiring is correct, there might be an issue with the wires themselves...what would I need to make either of those leds work? Also is there a way to test an led by itself to make sure it works? The one I have is 1.7 volt 20 mA. Thanks!

Sounds like you need to use a resistor (what happened to your question on that?), otherwise you're potentially putting 12v to the LED that's rated at 1.7v.

http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz this site helps you determine what size resistor you'll need.

On those LEDs I ordered can you tell me their voltage and mA? Also how do I go about testing that the LED actually works? Is there a correct way to hook up the resistor or does it not matter?

Thanks!

u said you got them from superbrightleds.com. since you have the model number, just go back on the site and click on the spec sheet. It'll tell you all that info.

and yes, there's +/- on LEDs. for testing, i just put a few batteries together to reach the rated voltage, then wire it up to the LED.

oh look, someone wrote a guide on this mod too... maybe it'll help you on the wiring.

That's a really cool little mod and pretty neat placement in what I find to be a nearly useless sunblocker up top. GJ

Ok super duper fast write up.

I made a wiring harness out of molex connectors so I could easily disconnect the LED. I ran the harness through the front of the headliner, down the a pillar, under the dash and connected it to where I had my DEFI gauges hooked up. I tapped into the 12v illumination supply and the ground off the radio harness.

^ harness for the led itself. I don't have pictures of the other, but it is literally a molex connector and two wires.

Now the fun part.

I used my map light to do this mod unlike the other posts.

I drilled a hole in the center of the map light closest to the rear view mirror.

This hole was widened and slanted to accomidate the LED straight up and down, if not angled a bit backwards. That was the hard part. Getting the LED to shine where I wanted. I tacked it with hot glue and it was basically trial and error. Eventually I got it to where I wanted for now (I was rushing, I might redo) and then smothered in hot glue.

Finished product

All pictures were with an iPhone, sorry for the quality or lack there of.

I don't have any glare off the rearview mirror. The LED is recessed pretty well out of sight. In order to see it from the outside from the front you have to crouch down.

Hope this helps!

I would probably increase the resistors resistance for a lower level of light. Just so you get more of a glow vs a light, the more subtle it is the better.
