Default 2015 WRX Avest turn signal wiring help

So a few weeks back I installed the OEM side mirror turn signal kit along with the purchased Avest turn signals from Subispeed. I was able to get the turn signal feature to work just fine with the supplied oem wiring and harness, but cannot figure out how to get the other features - DRL and courtesy light - to work. The Avest kit comes with an odd harness and a bunch of blue, black and white wires, but the install instructions are pretty bad as they are generic and translated from Japanese it seems. Has anyone installed these successfully and figured out how to get all 3 functions to work? I checked another post also, and a forum member added this:

"It is definitely not plug and play. The wiring does not exist in the door for any lighting other than the turn signal. You would probably wire the puddle lights to your overhead lighting and the drls maybe to a fuse that cycles with the ignition."

Sorry I cannot be of any help right now, but I am ordering the kit from subispeed (PO ratle canned the mirror covers and nobody needs to twist my arm to buy something pretty for the car to fix that ). I'll keep an eye on this thread and will be sure to drop some feedback once I get the goods and take a whack at it.

I'm thinking the courtesy light can be wired into the dome light, but I'm not sure yet about the puddle light...maybe the same spot?

Good luck!

Ok. "Courtesy" and "puddle" light are the same thing/function fyi. The 3rd option the lights offer are DRL, which to be quite honest, I could do without. Most people do seem to wire the kit up to the dome lights, as those go on and off when the car is unlocked and the door gets opened.

I know they have a video for another brand of turn signals. The puddle light gets tapped into the harness by the fuse box.

I just finished this mod yesterday and what a pain in the ass. the white wire in the kit is the positive for your approach/puddle light feature and the black wire that is attached to it is your ground. you should wire these two wires like the one in the subispeed video for the puddle lights.

make sure you wire the white wire by using the addafuse to the 15A fuse for seat heater and wire the groud to the harness (pink and blue wire) with the t-tap. just grounding it to a bolt will not work. the puddle light will remain on. However, the easier method is do what ninjabartx did and run the wires to the dome light. way easier.

as for your drl function John nguyen's video explains it quiet well however the colour wires he has are different than in the kit.

the purple wire he refers to is the blue wire in the kit and the blue and white wire in the video is for the puddle lights (black and white) john wires the purple (our blue) wire to the 20a fuse and the ground for this function uses the same ground as the signal therefore a separate ground is not necessary.

The hardest part is running the wires through the mirror down in through the door and in the rubber boot between the door and the frame. if you use a long zip tie and cut a small hole on the top of the boot it should work. just make sure when you take off the rubber boot to take the plastic inner piece off with it otherwise you'll spend hours trying to slip the rubber back on to the plastic piece to keep everything weather sealed

i hope this helps. you can dm me if you have any other questions

Thanks a bunch T-Ma5! Subispeed said my stuff is on backorder (sigh), but I'll still keep this thread updated when I toss them in.

Thanks a ton T-Ma5 for the info and videos. I'll let you know how it goes if/when I give this install a revised attempt. Good luck to MADMarc also.

I have the Avest mirror light installed with only the turns working at the moment since it was plug and play. Will have to tackle running the wires from the mirror through the door panel and into the cabin hopefully in the next week. Will prob add a 3 pin connector to the continuous wire run inside at the mirror just so it's easier to disconnect in the future.

I'm good with wiring up the puddle light, but my question to T-Ma5. Are the white running light always on once the car is powered? I'd like to tie it into turning on only when dark, either with the "auto on", or manually turning on the head/foglights.

Are the white running lights bar/strip even visible during the day? The bar/strip when blinking amber are "barely" visible during the day, thank goodness at least the rear blinking LED portions are bright and visible. From photos/video, the white bar/strip mode seems to be brighter than the amber.

I have the Avest units installed for full functionality and they're great for the price. I wired in the white DRL's to stay on whenever I turn the key and they aren't that bright during the day but look killer at night. The puddle lights I tied into the fuse box like the subispeed video shows instead of the dome light. The puddle lights are on during day and night when I unlock the door which is fine by me. They're very bright and useful especially when camping or in a dark parking lot. Overall I agree the front blinker/drl should be brighter but I still recommend these.

thx for the feedback. yes i agree light bar/strip looks great at night! is the white DRL any brighter than the amber turns during the day though?

If I were to guess I'd say it's the same brightness as the amber turns during the day

can anyone tell me how the blue wire works to light up white running light?

i managed to run the three wires (blue, black, white) from the mirror turns into the door, and then into the cabin this w/e. threading the wires through door/cabin rubber weather proofing was a royal pain!

i tested the puddle light by using a 9 volt battery and connecting the black wire to negative and white wire to positive and it lit up fine. but i can't figure out how to light up the running light to test the wiring. keeping the black on negative and touching the blue to the positive did nothing. so the black and white is only for running the puddle light. what is the blue running light grounded, is it on the same circuit as the amber turning wires in the mirror?

also, i'm thinking i'd like to hook up the mirror turn white running light to the same circuit as the running c-lights for the rear tails, ie when the c-tail lights are low red for night time. since the mirror turn white running isn't that bright and barely visible during the day, i don't see the point of running them constantly.

the wire for running c-light on the rear tails should be black with white stripe. i'm hoping that i can find that wire on either the driver or passenger side foot well and tap into it from there instead of running an extra wire from the front into the back trunk. if anyone knows if that would work and if that is possible, or where i'd be able to locate that connection in the foot well, please let me know, thx!

The blue wire uses the ground from the signal lights, not from the puddle lights. So you can’t really test them. I ran the blue wire to the interior fuse box and attached it to the seat heater fuse with an addafuse. As to tapping into the wire you want to achieve I have no clue.

thx, i finally got my fuse taps i ordered and ran the blue wire to test on the 20a accessory #13 socket and the white running lights worked fine!

i tried out the few unused fuse sockets to see if i could get any to work and i've settled on using the middle #30 socket at the bottom instead. socket #5 at the top and #23 seems to be dead and provided no current.

i'll be wiring up the turn puddle lights once i get my connectors i ordered to splice together with the oem puddle lights which i'm also adding to the mirrors as well.

@itsse Why do you feel the need to have both the Avest and OEM puddle lights? I find the Avest ones to be super bright already. Got some serious puddles up there in Ontario eh?

… originally i had bought and was only going to install the OEM puddle lights.

it bothered me that the front portion of the OEM mirror turns does nothing, just wasted space and was considering the Avest. but i had read the Avest front orange turn and white running lights strips wasn't too bright for daylight and so i wasn't sure if it was worth the money. but then when i saw how much time/effort it was to bring in the wires from the mirrors through the door and into the cabin, i thought i might as well pull in the extra wire and bite the bullet to buy and try the Avest. i do think they kind of suck for daytime and wish there was someway to improve them, but they do look sweet at night.

since i have them, i might as well hook the OEM puddles up and see what a difference it makes. if it ends up being too bright with both, then i can just hook up one or the other. and if it ends up being the Avest, then i can always sell on the OEM puddles i guess.

Haha alright makes sense. Yea for the price the Avest lights are pretty much a no brainer. Sure they could be brighter but I'm very happy with mine. I recall the OEM puddle lights being pricey that's why I asked.

i got the OEM puddles for about $80, so significantly cheaper than the Avest. worth the money considering it's JDM import and OEM. if you or anyone else is looking for a set, lmk.

You can get the avest turn signals/drl/puddle lights for $119 shipped...$39 is not "significantly cheaper" especially since you get all that added functionality.

i'm in canada so it cost me extra for shipping to get it across the US border from Subispeed, as well as customs/duty charged on that and factoring exchange rate.

Hey itsse03 -

I'm not sure if you figured out a way to do this, but I just installed these turn signals and I ended up just sticking an add a fuse into Fuse #14 (10amp - Parking light, Tail light, Rear combination light) and that accomplished the same functionality that you are looking for.

The DRLs aren't on when my parking/light switch isn't on, but when you turn them on, the DRLs also turn on. I think this is a good idea since they aren't very bright and I won't typically run them during the day.

I haven't messed around with the puddle light yet, but will get there eventually.

Been runnin these about 2yrs. The puddle light is rather bright and much to my surprise I find it very useful. The DRL is definitely underwhelming, mine is on all the time and you can't even tell its on during the day. Looks great at night though

thx, i ended up just tapping the wire into an empty constant on socket. i found when it's overcast and the auto light sensor hasn't switched on the head/tail lights yet, you can still see the mirror white DRLs okay as the brightness is decent enough for that.

as for the puddle light, this is the best solutions i've found that works well and is relatively easy enough and cleanest way to do:
