Default car sales tax in IL

Anyone know for sure how it works?

Are you charged based on where you buy the car, or where you live? What is the home rule crap?

I live in prospect heights. 7% Buying a car in Hoffman Estates which is 6.5% but somehow the rate they calculated is over 8%

You pay the tax in the county where the car is registered. I used to work at a dealership in Janesville, WI. All of the IL people would come there to try to take advantage of the 5% sales tax. Didn't work. Chicago sales tax sux!

Dealer or private?

Private you will pay ALOT less tax, as long as the car is less than $15,000.

Private is based on what year the car is, assuming it is less than $15k. Dealer has to charge sales tax based on price of the car.

New car at the dealer.

We have really goofy laws about sales tax here.

That's the problem. I have the list. Most of cook (outside chicago) is 7%, surrounding counties 6.5% However the calculating apparently isnt as simple as that.

You should only have to pay sales tax for the zip code its registered to.

Home rule cities can charge a sales surtax over and above the base county rate. Usually .5-2%, but can be more such as in Chicago.

And yes, the calculation IS as simple as that. If the dealer tells you anthing different, its BS.

Anyone know if there is some backdoor stuff with the dealer reimbursing you the difference? I know buying used from a private party is a flat fee of a few tiers but buying used from a dealer gets the 7 or 8% sales tax rate.

Also what happens if you trade something in, do you just get taxed on the difference of the trade vs. the new?

A coworker bought a car recently and the for some reason it worked out to be cheaper tax-wise for her to trade her old car in compared to putting down the amount of cash that the dealer would give her for the trade-in and selling her car privately. Not sure how it works, but when we bought our cars the new ones were whatever the local tax rate was (don't think you pay taxes on delivery, freight, etc. just the purchase price) and the used ones where a certain fee based on purchase price and age of the vehicle. If it's a used car the tax amount should be listed on the secretary of state's website.

You get a credit for the sales tax amount of your trade in. In simple round numbers a 20k car with 7% tax equals $1400 in sales tax. If you trade a car worth 10k on your 20k car, you get a tax credit of $700... so you only pay $700 in tax.
