Yep, generally the pipes are purged with argon to provide an inert environment on the back which prevents sugaring/oxidation of the weld.

No reason why not. They make some good rods that leave a nice bead too

There's no reason not to if they are solid welds. However, if you have access to it, I would learn to TIG if I were you. So nice! |

^ya I'm pretty decent at arc and mig, but I always shock myself or burn holes with tig. I'll practice some more some day.

Gonna have to save this thread for when I start working on my own. Love the beautiful stainless here, as well as all the bench-top shots.
Do have some questions relating to people's builds, to give me a chance to plan my own. What alloys are favored for your exhaust work? Personally, I'd consider marine-grade 316, but maybe that's just because I live in the north-east... What sort of tuning are you planning into your builds? I figure that hi-flow components are a must, although I've heard that equal-length headers don't work quite as well on our boxers. Just as a reference, I've got a 2006 outback with a N/A 2.5L, although I'm thinking about rebuilding it with a turbo, or swapping to an STi motor. The exhaust work will probably be part of the rebuild/swap. Still very much in research phase at this moment. |

It's been covered a lot in this thread and forum, Columbia mandrel bends is one, burns stainless is another. Reid Washbon has some nice exotic stuff.

How thin would any of you go for a SS system? Im thinking .020 304 for a dp back system. Car doesnt get used on the street but for limited runs. Think I could go thinner and it not get beat to crap? Im trying to keep it as tight to the bottom as humanly possible.

It's going to be impossibly hard to find that wall thickness in anything, even 321 or inconel
Thinness wall available for 304 is 0.035 and you won't be able to find that in a tubing size larger than 2" very easily. 0.049 and 0.065 is pretty standard, both should be okay for what you are looking to do. You could step up to 321 and to a really tight fitting 2.75" exhaust in 0.035" that's what my plan is... |

So you want someone to roll stainless sheets and seam weld it? I don't see the benefit of that and it Sounds expensive to me, better off using 321 0.035 it can handle the heat way better than 0.020 304, it will be too weak and you will risk cracking.

Your asking for trouble with .02" tubing. And no one will just make a small amount of that size. You need to order a **** ton of material from a mill to get a special size. I wouldn't do anything less than .035" and it would have to be 321 or inconel.

Why so thick and why not 304? Its just from the dp back. People are using aluminium for catbacks and this isnt a street car.
