First of all, Unabomber is exactly right. The reason so many parts guys INSIST on the VIN is that Murphy's Law will almost GUARANTEE that if they do not get the VIN, the customer is going to come back saying, "Weird, this part doesn't fit my car." Rework for the parts guy, no additional revenue, time lost. Sure, WE know what we're talking about, but average Joe may not, and lots of general repair shops don't know the difference between an '02 and an '04 WRX.

When I have to supply a VIN, I just look at my handy-dandy table of VIN numbers that I've gathered over the years, mostly from cars that my own shop-mates have owned. I have most of the common models covered.

Which brings me to: Could we have a thread that just compiled VINs of each year/body style/tranny type? We'd just need some volunteers like Unabomber to pitch in. I'll happily donate my Legacy GT VIN's... I'm sure in short order we'd have a very complete list, and nobody'd ever have to go asking again.

its broken down even further than that. the same legacy GT could have 1 or more vin breaks with in the model year. You would need a vin for every production run with in the model year.

Well done Unit and Unabomber...

If the parts person is knowledgeable...He should be able to find anything...
I sometimes have to call Subaru to find what I am looking for...because the System isn't at all logical...(meaning ..You might know the part your looking for...but its in a Weird place to find it... your like why the hell did they put this here???? type of thing).......Just today I found out that all 07 Subaru's come with a power Socket...not a cigerette lighter anymore...the customer wanted a Lighter like the old days...well the standard element wouldn't work...so I thought there was a newer element...nope...if this person wants a cigerette lighter in her vehicle...she has to order a whole socket and everything...plus the element...

Crazy..I know...Oh and sometimes...they don't tell you this stuff til you call......

Yeah, I ask for the last eight digits of the VIN anytime I'm working on non-obvious lookups.

Oil filter, sure...

15208AA100 for 4 cyl.
15208AA031 for 6 cyl.

would you like an 11126AA000 with that, or do you have a Fumoto valve?

Less obvious parts and with high dollar purchases, I want to make sure it's ALL the right parts for the car.

I had one dumbass come into my dealership...without the VIN. He thought he knew everything. He returned 3 times...each time without the VIN, and we ordered part after part. He kept getting more and more frustrated (as did I) thinking it was my fault.

He finally broke down and brought in the VIN as I had asked him to do the previous 3 times. He got the right part in two business days.

Only missed the fuel filter and the windshield washer fluid...but the WW fluid is usually sourced elsewhere at better price/profit margin.

That's funny because the fuel filter is the first on the list. Oops.

Who, for extra credit, can name off all the part numbers used in a DOHC (the common ones) head gasket job? We'll throw in extra credit for the tensioner and idler pulley numbers as well as the timing belt (since you're that far in).

No, I don't remember superceded numbers. At least you have the t-belt and head gaskets with those two.

I can't remember the rest off the top of my head.

Work mode and home mode aren't meshing tonight.

Giving subaru your VIN number does not insure you will get the right parts:

Blame the guy for that, not your VIN number.

I'd guess he never even entered your VIN into the computer.

I work for a bus dealer in maryland, and we need the VIN to make sure the customer gets the right parts and we also keep track of the parts they use from the VIN. Also the big one is that we use the VIN to check the warranty on the parts that they are buying and or replacing.
