Best thing for taking off Rain-X or any wax on glass is Soft Scrub. I found that Rain-X needed to be reapplied quite often, otherwise the whole windshield was one big smear. When I got sick of the weekly ritual, a quick Soft Scrubbing took care of things. Whatever you do, don't use Soft Scrub on your lights. |

Another happy Rain-X'r. Any speed over 30 miles per hour and you don't even need your wipers.

I love this stuff. the faster you go the better it works
Good enough for professional race car; good enough for my car. I just wonder why I didn't use it sooner. |

damn this thread is old, look at the date on the first post.
Anyway, rainx rules. I use the normal stuff on the outside, and anti-fog on the inside. I had a BIG problem with fog when i first got the car. Dont know if it was something on the windshield or what, but every night, soon as it started to cool off a little, the whole windshield was instantly fogged. It got so bad that i had to pull over every 3-4 mins to wipe off the windshield. Used anti-fog and haven't seen any since. |

Yes, the anti-fog is horrible! Had the same experience ...
It seems to me Rain-X on paint would be a bad idea. It's alcohol based along with something that smells a little like shelac. |

Yes, the fog is a big issue. I agree with all the happy RainXer, the first time I apply it, I couldn't stop looking at the raindrop snelling off my windshield. I was rainning hard, I was going 70mph at night, the wipers never came on.

the anti-fog stuff is horrid. it leaves this nasty smear on your windows, and makes the interior smell like..well.. rain-x, plus whenever any one tuched the window it left huge smears and streaks.

Rain-x is rad. I put it on just about every other time I wash my car. I will continue to use it as long as windshields need it, I suppose.
Having read through this thread, I wanted to mention a few things about it's composition. Rain-X is not a wax and the only purpose the alcohol in the container serves is to keep the active ingredients from reacting. Rain-X's main component is what is known as a silane coupling agent. They use the same stuff when making glass fiber reinforced reinforced materials to get the resin to wet the fibers, if necessary. Only, with rain-x it is a little different; in this case it is an anti wetting agent. I made a little schematic of the molecule for your pleasure or annoyment below. The OH groups react with one another and the glass once the alcohol flashes off and they hydrolize. You end up with a polymer film stuck to your windshield with a bunch of exposed CH3 groups that have far less surface energy than water, as such, water is repulsed. CH3 | OH-Si-OH | OH I really don't know this stuff off the top of my head, but I wrote a paper on it last week for a composites class I am taking. That was my reward for asking what was in Rain-X! |
