Meanwhile, we anticipate the 2021 F-150 to start trickling into Ford dealerships by the end of 2020.

We hesitate to recommend specific body styles and bed lengths because those decisions will vary according to an individual's needs, but we would suggest going with at least the XLT model, as it's a step up from the very basic XL work truck. Those looking for a few luxuries may find the Lariat the best mix of features and affordability. Ford hasn't released pricing or option packages, but we're fairly certain the company will resist the urge to fuss with a winning formula.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Like the 2020 model, the 2021 F-150 will be available with several engines—a 3.3-liter V-6, a 5.0-liter V-8, a twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter V-6, a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6, and a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6. No matter which engine you choose, the F-150 comes paired with a 10-speed automatic. Buyers will be able to choose between rear- and four-wheel drive. A plug-in-hybrid model is also in the works and will utilize an electric motor to provide up to 10 miles of electric-only range before one of the turbocharged V-6s takes over. The rumored all-electric F-150 will likely be a joint venture with EV upstart Rivian, but Ford has yet to announce much about that.

Towing and Payload Capacity

The company hasn't released towing or payload figures yet, but we don't expect the 2021 F-150 to lose any of the capability of the outgoing model. That means a maximum towing capacity of at least 13,000 pounds, which keeps it in the hunt with key rivals like the Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, and RaM 1500

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA likely won't release fuel-economy estimates for the 2021 models until the truck nears its on-sale date. We expect to test several F-150s on our 200-mile highway fuel-economy loop and will update this story with results once we do.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Interior appointments remain unknown, but Ford will need to up the ante in order to compete with the Ram 1500's deluxe cabin. We're hoping for more premium materials, additional convenience features, and an onslaught of new tech. Passenger space is expected to be similar to the outgoing model, with the four-door crew-cab body style being the most spacious and family friendly of the bunch.

Infotainment and Connectivity
Ford will provide an 8.0-inch infotainment display as standard running its Sync 4 software, while a much larger 15.5-inch unit will be optional. This will top the Ram 1500's optional 12.0-inch vertically oriented display and completely dwarf the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra's 8.0-inch screens. We expect Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot to be standard; navigation and SiriusXM radio should be available as options as well as a premium stereo system from Bang & Olufsen.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
We expect crash-testing to take place just before the truck goes on sale, so there's nothing to report on that front yet. Ford hasn't mentioned much about the new model's driver-assistance features, but our guess is that the F-150 will offer many of today's most desired features and some may even come standard. We anticipate the truck will have:

Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
Available lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
Available adaptive cruise control

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
We don't expect Ford will change its standard warranty offerings for the 2021 model year. The current truck comes with three years or 36,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage and five years or 60,000 miles of powertrain protection. Ford doesn't offer any complimentary scheduled maintenance, but rivals such as the Toyota Tundra and the GM twins do.

The Ford F-150 pickup truck is getting a redesign for 2021.
Here's what we know about the updated truck, including its powertrains, interior details, and styling changes.
The standard F-150 will arrive first, with electric and Raptor versions to follow.

Our sneak preview of the most exciting cars coming in the next few years draws on knowledge from leaked product-development plans, spy photos, and loose-lipped insiders mixed in with information that has already been officially released. The reporting for this story was completed in February and early March, before the auto industry began feeling major effects of the coronavirus pandemic. As many automakers are now delaying or pausing development programs, the debut and on-sale dates reported here may change.

Electric Ford F-150 Could Be Here as Early as 2021
The switch to an aluminum-intensive body for the last-generation truck was a monumental endeavor, requiring significant retooling of manufacturing facilities and body shops alike. Ford took smaller steps this time. The F-150's sheetmetal will retain the same shape but carry a revised nose and new headlights. Astute eyes might also notice different taillights, but overall, this redesign looks more like a mid-cycle refresh than a generational transformation.

The changes should be more obvious inside. Attempting to catch up with Ram's upscale interiors, Ford's Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum models will include more premium materials and touch points. An 8.0-inch infotainment display comes standard while an optional 15.5-inch screen takes on square proportions in a nod to the Instagram generation. Both run on the brand's latest software, Sync 4.

Ford will offer a powertrain for every buyer, with five engines carrying over from today's F-150. Disregard all rumors of a DOHC 4.8-liter V-8. The 5.0-liter lives on and shares more parts with the Mustang's V-8. The four V-6s include two twin-turbo engines displacing 2.7 and 3.5 liters, a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel, and a naturally aspirated 3.3-liter. All are backed by a 10-speed auto.

Ford also will offer a hybrid with an electric motor sandwiched between a V-6 and a 10-speed auto. In addition to improving fuel economy, the hybrid powertrain will double as a generator to power tools, lights, and other electronics on construction sites and at campgrounds. If that's not green enough for you, Ford plans to introduce an electric truck a few years after this F-150 launches. Spy photos suggest this version will replace the live rear axle with an independent suspension. With GMC already touting a four-digit power figure for the Hummer EV SUT, we see a new battlefront emerging in Detroit's unending truck war. And if Ford doesn't call this one Lightning, something has gone very wrong in Dearborn.

In the world of dirt and gas, the desert-smashing Raptor will switch from leaf to coil springs on its live rear axle. Rumor has it that the 760-hp supercharged 5.2-liter V-8 from the Mustang Shelby GT500 could find its way under the hood, too. With the Hellcat-powered Ram 1500 Rebel TRX on the horizon, we believe it. The F-150 is scheduled to make its debut in June, with the electric and Raptor models following sometime after. With more variants than ever, this F-150 will stretch from as low as $30,000 to nearly $100,000.

(Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story reported that we anticipated a plug-in-hybrid F-150 to be offered and that the electric F-150 would be built on a Rivian platform. Ford spokesman Mike Levine has corrected us, saying that there is no plug-in-hybrid F-150 planned and that the electric F-150 will share nothing with Rivian vehicles.)

We haven't seen many major new-vehicle reveals this year for obvious reasons, but a very big one is coming next month. On June 25, Ford will drop the covers on the next-generation F-150 pickup. Mike Levine, Ford's North America product communications manager, shared the news on Twitter earlier today.

We already know a lot about the 2021 Ford F-150, though. For one, the new truck will adopt design cues from the recently refreshed Ford F-Series Super Duty, as such expect the full-size F-150's grille, hood, and lights to sport an appearance that mimics that of the bigger Blue Oval pickups. We also know the upcoming F-150 will sit on a new frame that supports a plug-in gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain. It's likely the F-150's hybrid variant won't be ready at launch, so we expect Ford to lead off with a selection of twin-turbo V-6 engines, a diesel V-6, and at least one V-8 option.
Spy pics have given us a glimpse of the truck's new high-tech interior. Along with its fully digital instrument cluster, the 2021 Ford F-150 will offer a large central touchscreen that looks to improve upon the current F-150's display.

Ford is investing around $700 million to make the next-generation pickup at its Dearborn, Michigan plant. In spite of its age, the F-Series remains the best-selling pickup—and vehicle—in the United States. The outgoing F-150 debuted for the 2015 model year and made headlines for its aluminum-intensive body. Upcoming gasoline-electric and battery-electric variants of the new F-150 ought to make it just as much of a game-changer as today's truck was nearly half-a-decade ago.

The current F-150 is a capable pickup in a highly competitive segment. As we've said in previous reviews, it offers a wide variety of strong powertrains and rides and handles surprisingly well for a truck. However, we've been disappointed with the towing performance of the diesel model. We can't wait to see how the new F-150 improves upon today's model.
