When do you know when a Subaru is really SAFE to go go all out
Well, Like a lot of people know, I build Race cars and Race Engines for a living and know when I have suffeciently tuned (Stand alone Speed-Pro computers with Lap-Top. DAMN HARD!) a car to be road worthy. Yeah, yeah, I know, I blew up my last Subaru Engine but htat was because of my own stupidity. I heard Detonation during the tuning process but pushed it anyway . I wouldn;t do that with anyones but my own engine.
Anyway, when does everyone feel comfortable with their Turbo Boxer setup? I have been driving mine for almost 2 months and have been getting on it pretty hard for at least 3 weeks occationally when the opportunity arises (read: someone wants to race) including a 1/4 mile pass at our local dragstrip at 800 miles on the new engine (good mph, bad e.t.). I feel very comfortable that the engine won't blow up on me becasue of various circumstances. I'm pretty sure people know my question by now so I will stop rambling. Eric

Honestly? I've never felt comfortable with my setup. I could never get it tuned right, I could never get used to the power delivery... it's just strange. Keep in mind though... my car has run 1-1/2 months with the turbo ON since I put it in first in July.
As for when to beat on a motor? Well when I rebuilt mine from the first turbo/detting/piston dead problem, I beat on it out of the box as I was using stock, used parts all around. On my new motors, I've waited the normal 1000 miles, but just for safety. I'm quite sure that the rings are seated fully the first few times you start and run the car and I've never had to replace the heads with new ones so the valvetrain is al set up fine. I think as long as the car feels solid, has no leaks, and is tuned right... go for it. If it's a new bottom or top end, give it some time, but it only takes until you get antsy to make you give it a go no matter what condition you think it's in under there. |

You know the answer to that question...
After a few oil changes and your gauges look ok and no cops are around...and that M'Fing kid in his 92 Civic with the Type R engine is throwing 9,000 RPM revs your way...I would say that will be a great time to go all out...Make sure your gas tank is always on 93 octane and all though...but you know all the basics and what not like your ABC's by now...Go all out and tell us what you think...

There's still tuning to be done, but surviving boost constantly for 20-25 minutes at a time for two days was a big milestone for me. I was babying it a little for the first couple of sessions, but the EGTs looked remarkably good, and the J&S wasn't retarding much (and that looked to be primarily road/suspension/engine/etc noise, not pinging per se), so I was pretty much 100% for the rest of the weekend. Lost some oil out the valve cover breather, but other than that, no problems. Since then, I've been much less nervous about it. (Hope this doesn't jinx me...) |

I have to say bringing it to the track and tuning it there was the best thing I could have done. You can go all out and really test all aspects of the Turbo.
After this past weekend at LSIR I finaly have gotten my car somewhat set. Do I feel safe driving it all out, NO, but that is who I am. I always think there is something I can do to improve it. In fact I don't think I will ever be satisfied. I may have finally got rid of all my pinging and given the car a smooth ride but I still don't feel like it is safe for me yet. I think the only thing that would make me feel safe is if I were to get is tuned to 350Hp or so and then bring it back down to 300, then I know there is a margin of safety. Right now I feel like I am sitting on th edge. I just know something has to give but I am not sure what. |
