Question VERY intermittent no start problem

After complaining that it happened twice, my wife was able to laugh at me when the '96 2.2 refused to start the other day.

Starter turns over fine.
Engine does not try to fire whatsoever.
Doesn't seem to matter if it's hot or cold.
Engine will eventually start normally after varying durations, no smoke or rich smell.
Joyous check engine light will gleefully shine, but eventually fix itself over time.

My gut feeling is it's electrical. Is anything more trouble prone on these? Crank sensor? Ignition amplifier? Any Suby techs hanging around?

if you could get the code pulled, that would help alot.

it could be a multitude of things.

Battery perhaps? Does the starter sound like it's really "working hard" to kick the motor over?

LaterZ!

I had this problem on my '92 Legacy less the CEL. Starter sounded normal, it just wouldn't turn over. A friend of mine had a similar problem in his Integra and it turned out to be a bad relay. I never got mine fixed, plus, like yours, it was very intermittent; maybe 5 times over the year I owned it, and it always eventually started.

It's not the battery, as prolonged cranking when it won't start doesn't drain it any.

Pulling the code would be nice, but by the time I could get the car to the dealer the light will be off again. Plus, I don't believe in CEL's.
My Ranger had stored codes and a CEL and my dealer still couldn't diagnose it. All it took was me, a shop manual, and staring at the various systems for awhile. The codes aren't always accurate for what the problem is; they may only point to a system that was affected by the failure.

my buddies car at work (honda accord) had a prob like this. You could hear the starter turning like a mofo, but nothing else & after another try or another 2 tries it would start. He had a bad battery. The battery is relatively cheap to get tested at a auto place.
