6 speed shift knob vs. 5 speed shift knob
Does anyone know if the 6 speed STi shift knob works on the Five speed shifter? I wanna buy the shift knob from Agency Power but i like the STi design more than the five speed design that they have. Just wanna know if it will work?

truth!
actually the thread pitch is the same you can run a 6 speed knob on the 5 speed shifters. but the boot will not stay up. you cannot do it the other way around tho. search around about Vivid/ AP There are alot of reputable manufactures and dealers that wont screw you. |

yeah I dont really care if the shift boot stays up, i like the look of the 6 speed shift knob better than the 5. The 6 is like a ball shifter, apposed to the goofy flat top that the 5 speed has. Maybe im just being picky and difficult.

I personally like the way the STi knobs look with the leather and the sticthing, so I'm making a new cap for it that has a 5spd pattern on it.

You have to push the cap out from the inside of the knob. then from teh back of the cap you can push off the shift pattern. The you have the sand the back of the shift pattern to get the black off. The pattern wont come off the plastic because the letters are sunken into the plastic. I'll be machining a new cap for mine so that it has the 5spd pattern on it. I also have my 6sp pattern that now has a red background instead of a black background.

Momo's look great. My only problem with them (non subi) is that they are held of with those little allen screws. That just doesn't cut it. I have a terrible habit of holding onto my shifter for dear life when going around corners fast (need better seats). I would hate for that to come flying off. Plus they wear out after a while and cease to stay tight...and some of them will screw up your threading.

subaru manual also suggests that you don't rest your hand on your shifter when you're not shifting |

I'm sure it's not a good idea to depend on the shifter for support in any situation though. I'll try to practing throwing my hand back on the wheel asap after shifting through a hard turn. |

I don't do the resting thing though, that looks to lame, like Action Man ready to shift at the drop of hat. But yea as far as the topic goes, its good to know that Sti knobs are the same thread. Just not crazy about those Universal non threaded knobs. |

hey wrx_wgn, you said that you dont like aftermarket shift knobs because they have to use allen screws to put on. i have to agree with you but that momo shift knob in the picture is specifically made for subaru's. that particular shift knob does not require allen screws, it screws directly onto impreza's and legacy's shifters, i have the same exact one. they make 2 versions of that shift knob, 1 that requires allen screws and another 1 made for subarus. if you look look real close to the picture it says subaru under the momo symbol. the subaru momo knob also has the lip so you can attach the shift boot onto. it looks factory. I just wanted to let you. |
