You'd be surprised at how unrestrictive most ugly and convoluted intake pipes are these days. Manufactuers don't leave HP on the table because HP is a major selling point for performance cars and cars in general. They spend millions in R&D to deliver maximum power, the most consistent power, best driveability for all situations, and probably most importantly, reliability.

Aftermarket companies need to be very careful when designing parts and must bench test the OEM part vs the aftermarket "solution". Just because it looks ugly and restrictive does not mean that's really the case and just because the aftermarket part can flow way more air doesn't mean the motor can do anything with it.

Mishimoto-

Can you look at the steering rack and see if the bushing design is same as the GR/GV gen? The word is the WRX/STI use much stiffer steering rack bushings and I'd like to use OEM parts where I can.

It's great news that the rear 20mm swaybar is a swap onto the GR/GV.

^^ This

From looking at the intake piping, it seems to me that except for the final little bit right before the turbo, the pipeworks look like they are "mandrel bends".

From the looks of the intake scoop, I wonder how directly the intake is drawing air straight from the front without any blockages. Drawing fresh air straight from the front of the car in a ram-air kind of manner has a huge effect on the IAT (intake air temps) and how the engine / ECU responds to heat soaking. But I think because of reliability considerations, most manufacturers take a more conservative approach and do not have a wide open front facing intake.

Words of wisdom...very true!

Apparently GM not only likes cover up's (lol) but they also do half ass work, or did, on their G8's V8.

It's the same exact intake layout as the previous gen, even the intake snorkel is the same. The snorkel pulls air from the air pressure area (measurable pressure only occurs at 60+mph speeds) at the grill and the snorkel is blocked off from the engine bay by some rubber flaps on the hood. It's a good a setup that keeps IATs lower and consistent and throttle response as snappy as possible. It's been well documented that the stock intake can flow way more air than even a Stage II setup can inhale, at least on the EJ25 cars. Short of perhaps removing the silencer to gain some more induction noise, there's not much of anything left on the table with the airbox and snorkel.

^^ Yes, snorkel was the word I should have used. It is very good to know that the stock intake can already flow way more air than the (stock) engine can handle -- if it is enough to feed a 25% larger EJ25, it has to be enough to feed the smaller FA20. But having measurable pressure only at 60+ mph is a little disappointing even when it is not at all surprising.

This "milk jug" serves as a resonator for the factory intake system. Among other purposes, this component reduces intake noise. Many enthusiasts choose to remove this to promote a louder noise from the turbocharger.

We shall see! We have quite a bit of testing and development to do!

Thanks! It is our pleasure to provide this information. We will have numerous components available, all products will be fully tested to ensure safe operation as well as optimal performance. The dynojet will not be getting any days off!

My intentions with my 2015 is to keep it pretty stock, just an accesport and probably a downpipe, but I also want to fix any reliability issues with it. I'm curious if 1) it's the same part that we see on the ej255/ej257 and can use aftermarket ones already available and 2) if different, are they still using the flux/braze design that is known to fail

I appreciate the videos, some very good information.
Thanks for the kind words! Although we do not have plans to drop the pan, we should be able to use part numbers to see if the pickup remains the same from the EJ. If not it would be great to take a look and check out the construction/design.

Great points! In developing several other intake kits we have found that the factory units are usually fairly efficient. Despite this we have been able to provide improved power output without effecting long term reliability. We will be performing extensive testing on both the factory intake system as well as the components our team develops to be sure we are providing optimal, yet safe power.

Thanks for your comment!

Absolutely! Unfortunately the new rack mounting setup is completely different than previous generations. Check it out below.

At least it appears that you can upgrade the front sway bushings in ~4 minutes with just one socket+wrench!

I'm also curious as to the strength/design of the stock intercooler, my 2010 end tanks were separating with only a downpipe and a tune, I'm hoping this intercooler can handle higher than stock boost levels.

One more picture/photo request for MISHIMOTO,
once again its in regards to the LED head lamps...
can you take a picture of the back of the LED head lamps..

Subaru (soa) said the LED head lamps are not compatible . . .
so if possible for reference sake. . .

Default Hitch options?

Mishimoto,

I know this isn't exactly your cup of tea since it isn't performance related, but you're the only guys that have looked at the underbody in enough detail to perhaps answer this question...

What are things looking like for trailer hitch options? I assume the Curt receiver for the 2014 sedan will not work. Tried finding info online for the 2015 to no avail. I hope something comes out soon, I want a bike rack and not in the form of a fugly roof rack!

Something that sits behind the diffuser and pokes out the JDM brake light hole would be soooooo ideal

Check back in a bit later this afternoon. Our next video features information about the stock TMIC and intercooler pipe!

Not a problem! We would be happy to help. I skimmed some of the Curt install guides and it looks as if they use the holes under the heat shields for the mufflers. We snapped a few shots of this area, which was simple now that the exhaust is removed. Let me know if you need any other images!

Thanks for all the questions and comments!

Check out the next video in this series! In this installment we highlight the intercooler and piping for the 2015 model. We also compare this to the 2008-2014 intercooler! Check it out below or on our Engineering Blog!

Mishimoto: please review the actual CVT and how it drives. I'm surprised this topic was not touched so far in any detail.

Thanks for the video. Looks to me like the intercooler is still going to be a weak point. Also looks like previous aftermarket intercoolers will possibly fit with different piping. I hope so, maybe my process west will fit.

Do you plan on being the guinea pigs by pushing the CVT to it's breaking point? I remember hearing a few years ago that CVT's weren't really capable of supporting high output engines. Surprised frankly to see one in the WRX. What will be the limiting factor with the CVT, and what are the expected upgrades to it in order to be able to support more power?

Also, haven't seen anything on this yet, but how does the size of the turbo compare to the outgoing model?
