Nice write up. I always cringe when I see people asking those kind of questions and they still owe $15,000 or more on their car. If you still have a big loan balance owed on your car, IMO you don't have any business making huge expensive mods. PAY YOUR CAR OFF FIRST DAMMMMMMMMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can see an exhaust, EM, stuff like that but people going for huge HP with outstanding loans makes no sense to me. |

+1 for this comment. If you're going to go faster, you have to be able to stop faster. Brembos could probably handle the mods being talked about, but I doubt that stock WRX brakes would be safe.

Actually the stock 06-07 brakes are what used to come on the STI. They are what came on the 22B which is a good bit faster than even a well tuned stage 2 STI.
At the end of the day, even the stock bugeye brakes are more than enough to lock up the tires. While pads/lines/fluid will give better feel, most people in an emergency are going to mash the pedal, and give or take 5 feet or less, the tires will be what determines how well you stop. IE there isnt any stopping distance to be gained by upgrading the brakes if you are on RE92s. Going to stickier tires will do more braking distances and help with handling (which will keep the car safer). If you are driving a WRX, and are on RE92s and you go beyond EM/Tune/TBE, you are wrong. RE070s are good enough to deal with it though. STI Brembos are fine for street driving of any power level car no problems, even in bone stock form. 06-07 WRX brakes are limited by the tires but are still VERY good. I actually prefer them to the brembos. I think they have better pedal feel. Unless you are talking brake fade, which isnt an issue on the street anyway. In which case all you need is better pads, high temp fluid (ATE superblue, although that is whats in my Miata and FXT, is NOT high temp fluid. Its better than stock, but not by a ton. Go for motul RBF600 or something like that) and stainless lines and fade will not be an issue for anyone but the most hamfisted drivers. |

This is so very true, I talk about wanting to get AP Stg 2, and I'm still afraid of full acceleration in my car as it is stock. Coming from a much slower car.

Great write up. +1 more for sticky.
And something that wasn't mentioned***8230;I would expect learning to launch and shift a manual trans in a 400 whp car when you've never done so before to be tempting the trans reliability genie a little too much. |

nice thread. They probably are on other car forums and they see posts like "my camaro (or whatever) gets 400whp., haha ur subarus sukc" and then since they've heard of STIs with that kind of power, think it's pretty easy to get.

I've driven a Stage2 STI right after driving my Stage1 WRX at the time, and that was a noticeable improvement. I've also ridden in a 950hp 71 Cuda, and sat in a 1200-1300hp dragster (firing that car up almost made me crap my pants). There comes a point where the level of power isn't even fun on the street because you have to micromanage your car so much you aren't even driving it. The Cuda, with 18" DOT slicks, would spin the tires almost indefinitely at full throttle on the road. We hit water when he was showing me the car and it went sideways at 60 (abandoned empty road, thankfully.)
You are right in that people need to be careful what they wish for. Think you want a certain power level? Drive it first |

Driving my buddies 06 STi with 300 WHP was borderline scary when the gas pedal went down. I think most of these people dont realize how fast a 300 WHP car is let alone 400.

Well over 300chp (it was SEVERLY under rated, by at least 50+hp) and a lighter platform? How do you figure the heavy 300hp usdm STI would have a prayer in hell? I mean you can take a GC8, stick a JDM V7 motor in it, leave it bone stock, and you run 12.6's if you drive it right. And thats with a VF30. The 22B had a larger turbo, and was a 2.2L motor. CHP was more in the 350 range, not the 276 they claimed. Even if it WAS 276, it was a far lighter car. 2800lbs. Thats over 500lbs lighter than the USDM STI. It would need only 250chp to equal the 300chp USDM sti. But it wasnt 276. And it wasnt 300. It was more power, and lighter than the USDM STI. No way in any universe would a stock USDM STI be able to keep up. And it skipad'd at .96G.. That means the USDM sti wouldnt be able to keep up in the twisties either. |

I think its funny how this post is at the top and there are still people making new threads asking about the best way to make 400hp.

STICKY !!!
It's not even about the money, it's about inexperienced drivers killing themselves, their friends, innocent people in the way, and the grief these losses cause multiple families. These cars aren't toys and sadly it kinda sucks how affordable they are. Parents and new drivers have no clue, awd and airbags are safe right!! Last edited by 575rider; 11-24-2007 at 01:50 AM. |

I love my STI enough to make it as bullet proof as I can. Im not saying I'm better than you by any means but don't hate those of us that work hard and manage our money a little better. Im sure if you could drop an AXIS Stg anything in yours you would. As Defiant has said it takes alot more to keep a car running at 400+WHP than you think. Anyone can put a turbo kit on and make the numbers but how many times down the track will that get you? I plan on running mine a long time on this setup and as a DD. First you don't know me or what Ive driven in the last 38 years. I happen to be very experienced as a driver and have owned many High performance cars. I agree there are many kids that have parents that buy them for the kids and have no clue. Last edited by 4ST-AIR; 11-24-2007 at 02:00 AM. |

My FXT isnt paid off and I have dumped a bunch of money into it.
And I just cant seem to care There is almost no chance that I will keep it till its paid off, I will pull the mods off and re-sell them to cover the downpayment on the next car. Lets face it guys, if being financially responsible was a REAL priority, none of us would be even driving a new car, with that huge initial depreciation hit, not very good gas milage, and fairly high insurance rates. Let alone even considering spending money to modify it. but this is all off topic at and at this point is ignorant that its even still being discussed. I will ask a moderator to delete all of the posts argueing about that subject (including this one) I would appreciate no more crapping up an important thread with it. |
