Before exchange to usd, gas here is around 5.09/gallon for 87 e10...

running 94octane e0 at around 5.60 a gallon.

mileage and power greatly improved so far.

Woah... where are you getting $1.48/l 94 octane? That's about as much as I pay for 91 octane (with unknown ethanol content)!

great stuff.

not too be too skeptical, can i ask: you have confirmed that the 89 you are using is not on the pure gas station list?
http://pure-gas.org

of course, i'm sure there is now way of knowing if they are doing something different with 89 in your state/gas company even if they don't advertise it.

anyway, i do intend to try this. i want to get this current tank below 1/4 to make sure i have large enough volume of the 89 to hopefully make a noticeable difference in my mileage. i really hope it makes a difference in my case.

thanks for this lead: worth a shot, and i hope others will try it. (i'll be doing it with Chevron, in the SF Bay Area, CA, FWIW)

^^go ahead and give it a shot. I stopped buying 87 gas in June and switched to E0 89. When I'm away from home, I try to get E10 89 or 92 from Shell.

It's a Sheetz station with big signs that say ethanol.

There are a couple stations around here listed on pure-gas but they charge A LOT. Like more than premium for 89.

Ah, that makes sense, I guess... I just noticed that you're in the TriCities area.

I'll probably be running a few tanks of Chevron 94 this winter, see how it works out. Partly for ****s and giggles, partly because of the zero ethanol content.

i wish we had even the choice for E0 in some flavor.

i took the plunge tonight and bought some 89E10. i don't drive all that much, so it will take a while (month+ and a few tanks) to see if there is a noticeable difference. i only filled up 9 gallons this time, so i'm running a blend on this next tank.

the good news for me is the price difference is only 10 cents/gallon more. so hopefully, i'll see similar success as the few of you here who have gone the higher octane route.

Almost ready to fill up again myself. I think I'll try the 89 as well. If 89 yields better mpg's that make the cost difference worth it, that would be good. With the winter months on the way, the car will begin to get a bit more use. It won't be long before the winter tires go on..... Sheesh. But that is another thread.

I went with a higher octane because the FB20 is a high compression engine and I read how the long term effect of the more explosive and low detonation resistance of 87 octane is one of the causes of head gasket failure.

Whoa, a tank of gas last for over a month? Yeah, that's not much driving at all. I would not want to have E10 gas sitting in my tank for that long without adding something to it. I use Marvel Mystery Oil to keep the fuel system lubricated. One ounce of 2 cycle TC-W3 oil per 5 gallons of gas will work too. I also fill up at half tank about once a week so the gas is always fresh. You should consider doing the same to mitigate the damage ethanol causes. Just a thought

I'm sorry. I didn't fully explain. I wanted to do 3 or more tanks before making a call on whether there was a real difference. I drive about 800mi a month and probably tank up 3 times. It will take a few full ups before I have a high percentage of 89 in there. (I filled 9 gallons yesterday) and usually buy around 9-11 gallons when I tank up.

I ran mine to under a gallon before filling with 89 the first time.

Ill be honest. I'm driving a bit more aggressively a bit more frequently than usual. I can't be sure it's not placebo but I would swear the fb20 is punchier with 89 especially at mid to upper rpms. I'm really interested to hear what anyone else experiences.

I felt the same as well, but I feel that some of it was due to lowered ethanol content. I'm now running 91 octane (have been for the last 25-30 tanks of gas), and it definitely felt peppier than the first 20 tanks of 87 and 89 octane.

As mentioned earlier in this thread (in response to FunkMasta), I intend to run a few tanks of 94 octane (0 ethanol) partly for ****s and giggles, but also to see how the performance will change due to zero contamination from ethanol. I'm expecting to see reduced fuel consumption, and better pick-up when tackling uphill terrain due to higher energy density, which would be consistent with the results I've been getting with reduced ethanol content in the higher octane fuels.

if you are driving more aggressively now, that makes your increase in MPGs even more impressive.

i also wonder about the placebo effect, but the car did seem a bit more peppy the other night after buying the 89 gas. i haven't really driven much since then: just my horrible 4mi commute to the train station means i go easy on it since its still warming up for most of the drive. i'll have a better idea (still could be placebo effect) this weekend when i drive a bit more.

keeping fingers crossed that i see something close to what you are seeing in going from 87 to 89. it would be tremendous, even psychologically to see the computer showing a higher number regularly

Default For what its worth...

2013 CVT hatch, did some large road trips this year, one has some interest because on the way there I had just had it serviced so tire pressure was about 32 or so and different on the way back.

Filled up the tires at the destination and then drove back. This was NJ to FL and FL to NJ. It was similar driving both ways, AC on 80% of the time, perhaps 90%. 32 PSI going, 38/39 coming back.

Way back MAYBE averaged 1 MPG more according to the dash with the heavier fill on the tires. Because of that I recently let the air out back to about 34 in each tire and I feel like the ride is noticeably more comfortable. From this I don't think I'll overfill my tires anymore, at least not with this car. The tires are Michelin Primacy MX4...

I have never noticed any difference between 87 and 89 (E10). I do notice slight changes from day to day which I am guessing has to do with the consistency of the air and what the sensors are reading.

Yeah I don't think over-filling tires is worth the mpg gain, you could get premature wear and cancel out the money saved in mpg.

Love this guy's site. He's working on a test of various ethanol blends to see how they impact performance and MPG.

hmmm...this is what i'm worried might happen. i'm wondering if hemo's 89 gas is somehow a smaller fraction of Ethanol for that octane. not advertised, so who knows.

yet, i am holding out hope that that may be the case for gas in my region, too. time will tell. it's worth the few dollar experiment. if i don't see an appreciable change after a few tanks, i'll go back. but i'm cautiously hopeful!

As far as tire pressure is concerned, I find 38 in the rear keeps the whole tire in contact with the road, and 40 up front because... 40.

I like the firmer sidewall, car feels a little more direct steering-wise.

My contitental pure contacts have 1"wider tread section, are stiffer, and do great on stock 32/30psi.

More pressure in the front and especially the light rear end actually reduces contact patch. The middle 1/3 of my stock tires were at the wear bars, but the outer part had 5/32 left.....I only ran them 3psi over stock.

Filled the tank this morning and got a hand calculated 33.9 MPG avg. Did a lot of long(er) distance driving to Oahu's North Shore these past 2 weeks and using A/C more often because of either the hot or rainy weather. Not too shabby.

I just did a round trip from Albany NY to Springfield MA, up and over the berkshires on the mass turnpike, @68mph cruise control, no AC, and netted just over 33 mpg.

Not the greatest, but it includes about 15 miles of city driving, and, driving up and over the berkshires. On a less steep grade I would expect to see higher.
