Default Honda Odyssey vacuum option

If you are a parent, you know this is awesome and you want it. If you are not a parent, you probably won't understand.

The minivan, the most domestic vehicle on American roads, is about to feel a little more like a house on wheels with a built-in vacuum cleaner.
At the New York Auto Show on Tuesday, Honda unveiled its 2014 Odyssey minivan -- and the feature getting most of the attention was a vacuum cleaner from Shop-Vac in the rear of the van.

Honda said the hose and attachments on what it is calling the HondaVac, can reach anywhere in the minivan and includes a replaceable filter and canister bag. It can run continuously while the engine is running or run for eight minutes with the engine off.
It comes in the Touring Elite version of the minivan and will go on sale this summer.
The Odyssey was the No. 2 selling minivan in the U.S. market last year, with about 126,000 sold. That put it behind only the Dodge Caravan, but ahead of the Toyota (TM) Sienna and the Chrysler Town & Country. But the minivan segment has been shrinking for years.

This is really quite brilliant...

A vacuum does infact belong in a minivan

It's one of those "why didn't anyone think of that before 2013!?" moments. It's too bad the Odyssey is still freaking hideous.

Whats wrong with a portable one that plugs in the cigarette lighter or a cordless one? Why does it have to be attached to the mini van?

I like the convenience. They should plumb the van with various vacuum points, like we do in new houses . And next, I want a Roomba for the car.

I'd still buy a Toyota, though, as an appliance minivan. Actually giving some consideration to replacing our Outback with a Sienna, believe it or not. With two kids, we're full in the Outback and it becomes a real hassle when we want to take just one more person along. Never thought I'd actually consider a minivan, but I guess as long as I still get my fun car, it doesn't matter what the wife drives...

Mini-vacuums that plug into 12v ports were provided with many full-size conversion vans 25 years ago. My parent's van had one and I don't think it was ever used. We just got out the regular house vacuum with the hose attachments. Sounds like rehashed marketing of something that fading away in the past.

I'd like one for my station wagon. Car wash vacuums suck. Because they don't

As a minivan it looks very attractive. But then again beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I like how the current generation Toyota Sienna and Honda Odyssey look compared to the American competitors.

It's too bad that the Toyota Sienna's AWD system is really lackluster.

I'm assuming there's a special compartment for storing the hose, like near the spare so you don't give up any space. That makes a huge difference.

And if someone out there is saying "what about the trunk, rear seat, or other storage areas then obviously you don't have kids or a clue how that works.

Why bother? Now you'll have to buy over-priced filters and bags from the dealership just for your Honda vacuum on wheels. I'm quite happy with my small, easily portable shop vac. It cleans out the cars just fine and it's not attached to any specific one of them.

This seems like a gimmick which will end up costing more than it's worth.

Why are the kids who made the mess not the ones doing the vacuuming? Cool gimmick for those without vacuums already in their garage.

The problem is people have to actively use it. They don't sue it with similair portable ones that probably are better becasue you can move them all you like. This thing is attached to the car.

It's not a problem of no one thinking of it, it's a problem of motivation.

Those cordless ones are pathetic. They are at best good for picking up obvious crumbs. If you want to actually clean though, you need a real vaccum.

After eight years maybe I should just tear the interior out and take it to a laundromat. Stick on some sound deadening while it's in the dryer...

I actually have effectively done that with every used car I got. I took all the seats out, took out the carpet and used a steam vac to clean it. Then put everything back in. You would be horrified and shocked how nasty the carpet is.

Or just replace it. Isn't very expensive.

I find that making the kids clean up after themselves leads to a cleaner car (and house). But i guess it's a great option for people with the problem of more money than brains...

Isn't judging other parents just the best part of being a parent?

Either you don't have kids or were a rather uninvolved parent during the whole baby/toddler/preschool phase.

So I guess I guess I must have touched a nerve, or hit the nail right on the head? My kids are 5 and 7. I almost never let them eat in the car for safety reasons, although they are old enough to now. On road trips we stop and get out of the car to eat. It's safer for everyone involved (the driver has to eat too), and it's easier to clean up. Babies sit rear facing, so you have no idea what the hell they're doing, so the last thing I would do is give them something to choke on. And I wouldn't give a front facing toddler an entire box of fruit loops while strapped into a car seat either. Yes, the kids have a snack or two from time to time in the car to hold them over 'till later, but we limit it as much as possible.

That's all fine. Good on you for raising your kids with that level of everyday discipline. But you did also say "it's a great option for people with the problem of more money than brains", which means you consider other parents who don't subscribe to your no-eating-in-cars rule for kids don't have as much brain as you. We all like to think that we are better parents than others, but to get that holier than thou over kids eating cheerios in a car seems a bit much.

The vac will probably be weak. I bought 3 12volt vacs in the past. It failed to amaze me.
Better off using the home vac. And this option will probably cost another $1000!
