Spending some of my Christmas on my Car - Exhaust Questions
I'm finally going to buckle down and spend my Christmas Allowance to myself (and then some) on a Stromung SS Dual Tip Exhaust. Can anyone help me with a few questions? Do I need one of these mid-pipe things? Is it honestly easy to do myself, or would I be better off taking it to someplace to install for me. I have a pair of ramps I could put the rear of my car up on, so at least I have that area covered. Any help would be great, thanks Also, what are all your thoughts of the Stromung Dual Tip. Thanks
Edit: Will it void my warranty/make dealership mad? [This message has been edited by Fido (edited November 16, 2000).]

Fido,
I have a Stromung dual tip exhaust. I love it. Without the midpipe, it's fairly loud. I got the midpipe about a week later and it seemed to quiet things down a bit. As far as the install goes, it shouldn't be a problem for you. Your car is fairly new so the bolts won't be that rusted. With the ramps, the right sockets and a little elbow grease, you should be able to do it yourself in about half an hour. It's pretty satisfying to do it yourself. Dan Z. |

Ditto. I got the SS Dual Tip and the midpipe in a group buy from Pam @ ISR (Thanks again Pam!) and I love it. Did it myself without even jacking or ramping the car

The stock midpipe is quieter than a resonatorless replacement in my opinion. Your second cat is about 1.75" at the terminal outlet and the Stromung is 2.25". I think that with the second cat in place a 2" straight midpipe would be barely bearable. I have a 2.25" midpipe with a resonator and my single-tip Stromung is quite tolerable.
Perception of noise is highly subjective. Since it costs nothing to keep the stock midpipe and is costing very little (if any on a NA car) horsepower, the best course would be to try the car for a week and see how you like the sound. Not loud enough? Go for a new midpipe without a resonator, it will cost maybe $50 to have fabricated. Too loud? Cut that puny stock resonator out and weld in an 18" glasspack (yes it can fit). You won't know until you try the muffler which way you're going to want to go. One thing you might want to consider doing anyway is to cut off the stock muffler-end midpipe flange and replace it with a 2" right away (it will slip over the end and the muffler guy can bump up the end of the midpipe to get a snug fit before welding it). Otherwise you've got a sudden transition from 1.75" to 2.25", which is about double the volume. This will cause the exhaust gases to slow considerably going into the muffler. Keeping exhaust gas velocity up is key, and gradual transition would be better. If you replace the midpipe, consider going 2"! I went 2.25" and I think this is not the best way to go. The transition at the second cat is just way too big, and the total volume of the exhaust increases by too much. Without a resonator I couldn't bear it on the freeway. 2" means the bends can be just a hair little shallower and still clear, and you retain the option of making it really quiet with a 14" resonator. |

You should also think about what you want to do in the future. I tried to mod my car with all the stuff that I would want/need with future mods. I ended up getting the 2.5" Rallispec N1 exhaust since I want to go turbo after graduation, but keep regretting not getting the 3" version for only $30 more. I know it would have been way overkill on my N/A car...but I wouldn't have to buy an exhaust system again later on.

PK Motorsport (or anybody)
So for quietest ride, should I put a 18" glasspack or an afternarket resonator ??? Now my 2.2 is stock, I'd like to remove the second cat, somebody have a suggestion for me, I mean starting from de first cat to the end, I don't whant too much sound. I will probably put a Dynomax Ultraflo. Dazz [This message has been edited by Dazz (edited November 17, 2000).] |
