Alarm/Key Fob Mystery.... 2007 Impreza
I just bought a 2007 Impreza Outback Sport from a guy and it came with two key fobs. Neither of them work. I started by changing the batteries. No luck. I tried to reprogram them. That didn't work either. When I'd cycle the key 10 times in 15 seconds, I wouldn't get the "chirp" to let me know I'm entering program mode. Then I realized that the Security light on the gauge cluster was not coming on... at all... ever.
The only other clue I have is that when I lock the car using the lock/unlock button and then close the door, I get the alarm chirp as if I had locked it using the key fob. So, I don't know where to start with this thing. Any ideas? NOTES: There is no evidence of an aftermarket alarm. The car is bone stock except for an aftermarket stereo and speakers. It's a 5sp with 131k.

You may have a document that came with the car that shows how to get the fobs working.
If not, in the "security" section here are a few ways to do the programming as well as troubleshooting. |

The car may see one of the doors, trunk or hood opened and not allow programming. Some security systems make a noise to let you know everything isn't closed. If you manually lock the driver door from the inside, does the security countdown light in the cluster start blinking quickly? Did you lock it from the outside with the key or by the button on the inside before closing the door?

A little OT, do you fly sailplanes? I'm asking because of your username.
If so, where and what? |

You get a alarm chirp when manually locking / unlocking from the button inside the car? First thing that comes to my mind is there was a aftermarket alarm at one point, and it was taken out, not properly at that. Seeing they installed a aftermarket sound system, would also make me lean more towards that idea.
Make sure to check all your fuses, and everything is plugged into the rear of the distributor box. Just my two cents |

My understanding is...
...if you do not have one working remote programming will not work for others (you stated "Neither of them work")
Had similar issue & had to bite the bullet for an expensive initial programming at the dealer. |
