Picked up my Baja today!
I've been working on a deal for about 3 weeks now - I was in the process of selling my 2000 BMW 323Ci - and closed the deal on Wednesday. We went to pick it up this morning. I really wasn't comcerned about the color - but did want a 5sp. I ended up with a Regatta Red Pealr beauty that I like more and more every minute.
This is our 6th Subaru. We've owned a '73 sedan, a '76 4WD wagon, a '77 4WD Wagon an '83 Brat and my wife currently drives an '89 Outback LTD 30th Anniversary Edition wagon. The Baja really is impressive. I've put about 40 miles on it today and it only took about 5 minutes of driving for me to confirm that I'm going to love this car. With all the discounts and coupons available, I was able to select one that had quite a few options. That's always been one of the great things about Subarus to me. The base price model is reasonably priced and already has lots of "extras." The accessories are, for the most part, pretty reasonable. This one had the popular equipment group, the protection group, the bed cargo group and the tweeter kit. I added the upgraded speakers and the bed cover (both are on order and will get installed next week). It sure is a fun ride. Any bad or good experiences with the bed cover?

Ooops! So much for proof reading. Lynn's Outback is a '98, not and '89.

I thought I'd try to see if i could figure out how to post a picture of the Baja here. I found the instructions in the FAQs - now lets see if I am awake enough to read them.

Congrats on your new Baja. The deals are definately better now than when I bought mine in Feb. Oh well, I still love it.
I have the dealer installed tonneau cover and it's ok. It's hard to get off/on because instead of snaps it has this lip thing that you have to un-hook then re-hook back into place. Not the quickest thing to be able to do. I've seen similar styles on some newer trucks so this must be the new trend on the covers. The thing I really don't like is you can't open the tailgate without undoing part of the cover. |

They really are great vehicles. I've put about 200 miles on mine so far and it's been total enjoyment.
Thanks for the feedback on the bed cover. I figured there would have to be some amount of fooling around to get it off/lower the tailgate. I do wish Subaru had put a lock on the tailgate. That way you could leave the bed extender in place without fear of someone opening the gate and taking it out while all of the car doors are locked. I wanted the cover just so I could put things back there without them being totally exposed to the elements and out of view. I'd also like to have an option for heated seats. My wife's Outback has them as did my BMW. I've missed them on the cold mornings so far. But, the Baja really is quite a bit of vehicle for the price. Keep enjoying yours and thanks again for taking the time to fill me in on the bed cover!! Mark |

Mark, I leave my bed extender in the car. With the cover on you can't see it. Also, as I previously mentioned, the cover takes some work to get off. I wish it was more like the cover on my husbands truck which has snaps and doesn't require you to undo the cover to open the tailgate.
Someone on another board mentioned they bought a 2 ft cable lock for their bed extender. They hooked it to one of the tie downs. |

I'd thought of this once, however if someone really wanted the extender I don't think a tiedown will put up much of a fight. You could wind up minus a bed extender and a bolt-cuttered tie down on the same night :/ Best bet is to put a pin on the tailgate and hook it to the trunk or door line of your alarm. |

Ellen,
I now fully understand what you said about the process of putting on the bed cover. The mechanic took me out to the garage after he finished it this evenong to show me the process - and with it being so new it sure is a bit of a "stretch" to get it on! I'm betting that a few days in the hot sun and a little use will make it a bit easier to work the edge over into the channel. On the good side, it's hard enough to take off to disocurage your average thief from taking the time to wrestle with it. They also added the upgraded speakers and they do make a prety nice difference as well - the car already had the tewwter kit but not the speaker upgrade. Hope your Baja is running well!! Mark |
