2015+ WRX Upper Door Trim
Hey guys, I am looking for options for sprucing up the door cards on the 2015-2021 wrx models and I was wondering if anyone knew of some options. The door cards are probably the weakest point of the entire car but obviously to hit the price point that had to be done. I think in the future I will go to a custom car interior shop and get a full custom leather setup done on the entire door card but I don't have the budget to put 4-6k into that currently so I am looking for some cheaper alternatives.
Any trim pieces that add leather to the door card is really what I am after but it looks like the best bang for the dollar would be the upper door trim piece like the one here in carbon fiber. https://www.subispeed.com/part/a-700...i#.YELDSOhKhGM I am wondering if anyone has seen these trim pieces not in carbon fiber. I think my first choice would be leather wrapped to avoid any kind of glare and add a soft touch surface since I like to put the window down and put my arm on the window but I might be open to painted or alcantara if that's the only option. Anyway, I appreciate any feedback and guidance on this. As a note I had overland designs do some alcatara wrapping for me on some of my interior trim pieces and I guess I could go that same route but I think it's a waste of material to buy a carbon piece and immediately wrap it in leather. If there was a plastic piece I could buy and do it I would but I think the entire door car is one injection molded piece of plastic if I am not mistaken.

The carbon fiber (overlays) are really glossy and to me, it looks like they would be a great source of glare. Yes, they would be hard and durable and waterproof, but they also just dead-end at the dash. Now you'll have these two textures that don't blend. Front and back uppers overlays are over $500 (for all four) . If you only do the fronts, will the car look incomplete? Have you thought about just doing a vinyl wrap on them (yourself)? Does vinyl stick to the door card material? Will the pattern be visible in the vinyl? Again though, we are looking at a glossy surface that could be a source of glare. And to top it all off, these OLM finishing pieces are just overlays that use a 3M tape to keep them in place. They don't actually replace anything, just cover it up...same goes for the carbon fiber window switch overlays. If your car is a show car and/or a mobile demonstration vehicle that gets viewed by a lot of people and the interior door card(s) matter, by all means, update it and redo it to make it look nice or more appealing. Or, if you are into the whole "because racecar" thing, find a full carbon fiber door card to really make them pop. Appearance stuff is nice, but I personally cannot get on board with "overlays". Personally, I think you are better off waiting and recovering they door card the right way. |
