Samurai Jack - I've tried every possible way to reset the system according to the instructions, but no go.

I'll have to drain and fill with the proper ATF fluid for the Power Steering.
We have only driven it about 5 miles after swap.

In NY your ecu and vin numbers have to match, in the case of a new ecu the dealer has to encrypt it to match the vin. I hope you got the original ecu also when you purchased the car. The original ecu can idle the car but not so well due to the different fuel injectors on the STi motor. If you need a stock 05 wrx ecu let me know, I have a good spare I can sell you for $100, pm if you want the ecu or have questions.

yes emissions are a tricky battle because they vary immensly from state to state and country to country. apparently people near me have told me they passed with a jdm ecu & catless. they just had all the readiness monitors set to force pass. plugged in, everything was a-ok, away he went.

Has anyone had any issues with running Learningview/Romraider/EcuFlash on windows 8.1?
I tuned the car back in 2013 (02 w/ v8. Tuned by Ron @phatbotti).
The car recently has been getting wonky AFR's at cruising/idle. Bouncing from 14.1 to 15.3 and such. Its about time for spark plugs/timing belt etc. but wanted to hook up a computed and read a random CEL that came on briefly yesterday.
I no longer have the windows 7 laptop i used to tune the car but do have one running windows 8.1.
I downloaded Learningview and got nothing. I downloaded ecuflash and romraider and got a little. Romraider logger doesnt show a com port connection BUT was reading off the ECU for a few minutes before it automatically stopped.
I have java updated (i think only 64bit?), enabled .Net 4 or whatever that enables .Net 2.0.
Computer is running windows 8.1, 64 Bit. Using Tactrix 2.0
Any ideas?

I do not disagree. I unfortunately only have the one computer running 8, and is also running Solidworks so i dont want to go back to 7.
I am ready to throw my entire laptop out the window if i cant figure this out.

Agreed. Have a base tune put on your ECU so the car will run & pass emissions.
- You won't have AVCS
- You will have minimal boost, like 6 - 8 psi

Once you pass emissions, just swap in the JDM ECU with the proper tune for the engine. It only takes a few minutes to do the ECU swap

Edit:nvm, Getting 0 degrees of VVT on either side. Guessing that the reason is something other than the wire shielding being compromised. Going to have to dig a bit deeper. Wonder if crank sensors failed or AVCS solenoids both failed. Between the fluttering AFR, the not stable idle RPM and 0 degrees of AVCS Id say I have some work cut out. Going to start with IACV gasket then keep digging. Its almost time for plugs and a timing belt anyway.
