Did it come on or just faintly glow?

My 02 would faintly glow when it was really cold out and would go away when it warmed up.

I think it has something to do with the sensor.

Any 5w30 full synthetic oil will suffice. I would opt for a 5w40 though. Most tend to have good experience with Shell Rotellla, which can be had at most any store including walmart. I personally run Motul 5w40 on the street in my car. Unfortunately the fact that your oil light has illuminated is the bigger issue at hand imo. I would not drive it until your absolutely sure your oil level is at the full mark.

Brand of oil is not nearly as important at this point as making sure that your oil level stays full at all times. A lot of members will warn against using Mobil1 oil, but honestly as long as the oil is changed when its supposed to be and kept full, you should have no issues. These motors a very prone to spin bearings when ran low on oil. You should be checking your oil level at every fill up especially if this is a new car to you. This way you get a feel for how much oil the car consumes as well as making sure its always topped off!

If your oil level is at the full mark and you still see the oil light illuminated then most likely your oil pickup has developed a crack and needs to be replaced asap! I don't here about this very often on your model year but I'm sure it is possible! Good luck!

Well previous owner said he used Mobil one. So might wanna keep that. But idk if it was on or glowing it is cold and hasn't been driven over the weekend. But the oil was low on the dip stick too.

I only drove it like 100 feet before noticing. So going to get oil now

Also if I out oil in it till its in the like full zone. Will the light definitely go away an what if it doesn't. I have work in the morning and don't want to drive to work with that scaring me

If you add oil and the light is still illuminated, shut your car off and find another ride. Your oil pickup has most likely began to fail and will lead to severe engine damage if driven in this condition.

The oil light should go off right away if everything is functioning as it should. As long as you don't hear any loud thumping or tapping on start up you might be ok. As a general rule with subaru's though, you NEVER want to see that oil light illuminate as that light comes on when there is less then 2psi oil pressure I believe. You typically don't want to see anything lower then 25psi at idle for oil pressure on these motors and anything less can cause potential bearing damage.

It could also be something very simple..here's a quote from KILLERBmotorsport who is a vendor on this forum. "Your oil pressure is fine, you have a bad connection from sensor to block. Usually caused by corrosion or moisture. The sender is below the alternator on the top of the block. Remove, clean and reinstall.

If you had low oil pressure (the light comes on at 2.1psi) the light comes ON."

hope this helps

And if your oil light is on, shut off the car until you figure out why and fix it. If it's full, I'd be getting the killer B oil pickup. Subaru oil lights usually only come on to tell you "I'm done, go buy a new engine".

If the light is ON or flickers turn the car off ASAP! Personally, I'd get a cheapo mechanical gauge and install it at startup. If the pickup is cracked (and the oil isn't hot) it may or may not light the light, but your pressure could still be really low. A mechanical gauge is cheap and will give you a very accurate reading.

FYI, cracked pickups go back to the begining of the EJ engines in the early 90's. The oldest car I've personally seen a broken pickup in was a 1997 with over 200K on the clock.

Low oil will not illuminate the light. If it reads any on the dipstick it's nowhere near low enough to make the light come on.

Remember, your viscosity is different cold/hot so the symptoms will change.

Good to know! And I apologize for misleading the op! So essentially that light will not illuminate unless the oil pan is pretty much empty? The pickup has to be uncovered?

Let it warm up to operating temp and see what happens as oil viscosity changes. Keep an eye for the light and any noises out of the ordinary.

2 quarts is pretty friggen low! Personally I'd change the oil so i could send a sample to blackstone labs to see if there was any excessive metal content in the oil especially from the bearings (typically lead and copper). There's not much you can do if you did cause any damage but at least you'd know if you need to save up for a new short block...like the one i'm selling

Personally i've had the oil light come on while driving up hill through the rockies running 1.25 quarts low. Nothing out of the ordinary showed up when I sent the sample to blackstone labs. The car went on to live 20,000 miles more before the transmission blew up

edit: I'd personally switch over to a different oil that subarus don't drink like water

Royal Purple and Mobil1 5W30 are teh 2 worst oils you can put in a turbocharged Subaru.

That reminds me. I want to check mine out when I pull the spun bearing motor out of my 04 -_- (220,000+ miles)

KillerB (basically the king's of Subaru oil issue solving) said if the light is on, don't start or drive. I wouldn't touch the car.

If it were my car I would drop the pan ASAP, no driving. Pain in the butt, YES. Worth it vs thousands for a blown engine/turbo? God yes!!

You'd be kicking yourself if something like this happened because you didn't check it out. Worse case you find a problem with the pickup and replace it. Best case you find nothing, know there's nothing wrong, and don't loose any sleep over it.

no one wants this...
