Simple answer: Get as far away from the UTEC as you can......It's a POS. You only have a small window of tuning with your ECU as it is simply a piggy back. Best advice, go stand alone EMS ECU or ACCESS PORT V3. Gives you complete and total access to tuning your ECU to you're hearts consent. Car will be running as smooth yet beast like as possible......just my 02.

Are the UTEC's easy to learn how to use? I need a good tune but there arnt any close tuners that are somewhat close in elevation as well. Its got a decent tune on it right now from VA but elevation has changed by over 1000ft. Iv never tuned a car before so im asking if it is easy to pick up on. Any info would help! (PM perferred)

Thanks in advance.

Default tune question

i bought a 2005 wrx with spt intake, catless uppipe, invidia 3" high-flow catted downpipe, catless midpipe, perrin catback. had the CEL on for AFR sensor on manifold. i replaced this, and it passed inspection, and has no engine light. The mechanic told me the cat code still reads "not ready". im thinking it must have an aftermarket tune to hide the light, probably a custom protune? is it worth it to take it to a tuning shop and have them check it out and make sure the tune is good? it smells rich, and inside of tailpipe is all black. everything else is good and no knock or anything. from reading the FAQ i concluded that the cobb ap wouldn't work for these mods, so it couldn't have that, do i spend the money and get the custom tune or is the car already good?

you are pretty extensive and your list of modifications. Didn't see anything about a Turbo XS Utec for tuning. I think you may have posted in the wrong forum if you dont already have it under the passenger footwell.

If this is just for the ecu reading not ready, it could be two things. 1) you haven't driven as many cycles and miles as is needed to pass onboard diagnostics. 2) the prevoius owner used a MIL resistor inline with the rear O2 sensor and is preventing diagnostics to be completed.

if neither, then I would try a spark plug anti-fouler adapter between the rear O2 and the pipe.

Just need a little tuning advice for the utec, I'm running a 2.0 with a hks catback, 3in catless dp, turboxs tmic, aftermarket turbo inlet, k&n intake, 650cc injectors and a vf39. Right now I'm just using the basic stage 4 map from turboxs but ive tweeked a little bit for the setup. I'm just wondering if anyone has a better base map for a similar setup? Also its not wanting to boost right almost like there is a fuel cut happening, and it just won't boost smoothly. Kinda wondering if I'm maxxing out the stock fuel pump

You can raise the rev limit if you are running the newer firmware

OS doesn't matter.
If you can run a hyperterminal emulator and a serial port (or serial to usb adapter), you can interface with the UTEC.

If your "PC" is running OS X, then you already have the interface,This link will get you connected if you are using serial to USB. I can't remember the last Mac that had a serial connection.
"Firmware" is already on the UTEC, after you connect you will see the version number and decide if you need to flash a new version. Nothing is installed on your computer.
Please understand the interface, variables, and values before editing any maps or settings. Good idea to make copies of the parameters and maps into the computer so you can revert of you mess up.
Improper settings can damage the engine, beware.

What kind of software are people using to log UTEC data?

I've tried MPS_UTECLogger and it works for UTEC data but it has a problem with my AEM UEGO wideband. It will log the 1st AFR reading then never updates after that. UTEC data work tho

I've seen Jeffsoftware UTI (Utec Interface) and UTI-ME but jeffsoftware.com doesn't exist anymore. If you have jeff's email then send it to me in dm and I will email him and ask how to get the software.

What else are people using to log?
