Default WRX STI S209 Coming To US Trademark Filing

Subaru Trademark Application Hints WRX STI S209 Coming To U.S.
The previous S-series WRX STI models have been very special. Now, one might arrive in the U.S.

Subaru filed a trademark application in the United States on December 12, 2018, for the term S209, suggesting the possibility of a performance-tuned WRX STI coming to America. Presumably, the model follows in the lineage of the Japanese-exclusive special editions like the S206, S207 (gallery below), and S208 (pictured above).

Subaru's application says the company would use the S209 moniker for "automobiles and structural parts and structural fittings therefor" and "floor mats for automobiles."

Subie refers to these S-series vehicles as the ultimate versions of its STI models. For example, the S206 in 2011 had weight-balanced pistons, connecting rods, crankshaft, ball bearing turbo, and revised ECU that boosted the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine to 316 horsepower (235 kilowatts) and 318 pound-feet (431 Newton-meters) of torque. Bilstein shocks and a variety of chassis braces helped sharpen the handling. An optional NBR Challenge package added a carbon fiber roof and black BBS wheels.

The S207 version in 2015 and S208 in 2017 kept upping the ante on these improvements. By the S208, STI managed to push the engine's output to 325 hp (242 kW) and 319 lb-ft (432 Nm).

STI has produced previous S-series models in very limited numbers, including just 300 examples of the S206 and 450 units of the S208. This would likely be the case for the S209, too.

It Subaru really wants to make the S209 special, it should put the moniker on the South-Africa-exclusive WRX STI Diamond Edition and bring the machine to the U.S. The model is the most powerful factory-built, road-going STI ever but only 30 of them are hitting the road. Parts like a revised ECU and performance exhaust push the output to 349 hp (260 kW).

A "final edition" send off before we see the new gen. It was stated a few years ago at the NY Auto Show that STi would be introducing more limited edition vehicles and parts offerings to the U.S. and with the Type RA and now possibly this, it might finally be coming to fruition. This car would undoubtedly cost more than the Type RA, but Subaru must be pleased with the number that were taken.

I really hope it doesn't come in that awful "grey khaki" body color.

I cannot wait for this body style to be gone.

Car only had a few angles that looked good.

No angles as far I am concerned. A rolling turd.

This car needs to go, long overdue, along with the museum quality engine. Not that I expect much from Subaru these days, but I'll keep an open mind.

I love the current generation and am glad to see an S20x come stateside. The only thing that doesn't draw me about the new body is that I see so many...good for Subaru, but the roads are littered with them. At least in my area. Doesn't matter though, as only kid haulers seem to be in my near future. Can Subaru bring back a fun wagon...

My 2011 hatch was the best WRX I ever had in so far as a total package. Stage 1.5 ish, nice gold wheels, good tires, and a manual. Such a great car. Still looks good to me today.

Sucks that there is no rarity in your area. I see a WRX once a week or so, but I rarely see an STI in the St. Louis Metro East. I love the look of my 18 and I think it looks contemporary. But, I will say that the trunk just seems to fall off, from the side view and front angle. As much as I would love to grow up and get rid of the wing, I think there's no balls from the rear windshield to the top of the trunk without it. To me, without the wing it looks good from certain angles from the side and rear. But, it lacks that sporty stout look that the previous generation sedans had with the aggressive trunk lid, but it wasn't too much. However, that's all completely subjective.

How do we know that Subaru won't continue to use this motor as the new motor in the new generation to carry on its iconic characteristics with more power? Just a question.

If I would have known back then how this all was going to play out, I would have kept my ‘08 STi, pulled the motor, completely forged it, precision turbo, FMIC, Ohlins, would have gone full boar. I loved the body style, simple dash, comfortable seats, etc. Hindsight is 20/20 and none of us could have guessed the tard level of SOA. Too late and I’m happy but man a 6spd Levorg would have been sick.

I think the EJ series has just about run its course...I may be wrong, but isn't the STi the only Subaru continuing to use this series engine? It was a great engine and not without its problems, but everyone else is moving forward and Subaru has not...when I read the C&D article comparing the 04 STi to the 15 STi. I knew the 15 was a better car beforehand, but the performance numbers are just too similar to continue with this drive-train.

The information being leaked, pondered and compared lead most to believe it will be replaced with the next generation. I also wish Subaru would put out a performance oriented standard or dual clutch transmission...this CVT stuff in performance cars and the Ascent just isn't my bag, even though it seems Subaru does CVT well. In some applications strength and longevity are the correct trade-off vs a slight improvement in fuel economy.

So basically we won't see a new gen STI until 2020 as a MY2021. That works for my timeline.

Current gen definitely headed in the right direction where the WRX is concerned. I've just been done with it since they premiered it.

Can't wait for the next step that'll still be two steps behind the car it's derived from!

probably longer than that, Subaru will just keep pumpin out special editions every year till they sell enough ascents and foresters with another redesign inbetween.

Palm to face

With no competition except the Civic Type R, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is indeed true.

Here’s hoping Nissan helps Mitsubishi bring back an EVO.
Here’s hoping Ford brings us a new RS
Here’s hoping Honda brings an AWD variant in the next gen Type R (they already have SH AWD)

That's exactly how I feel. And that horrible stock tune on the 15+ WRX with rev hang. Why Subaru?? Why?

I really hope Subaru delivers with the next gen WRX/STI but I don't really like any of their styling. The previous gen WRX/STI both look better to me than the current gen but the interior was pretty bad unless you really like hard, cheap, plastic.

Ford will likely have a new RS. Just not for sale in the US. They are making new Focus ST and Fiesta ST models. It again not in US.
