QUINCY, W.Va. -- A Chelyan man drove under the influence to a State Police detachment because he wanted to report a vehicle stolen from his home, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha Magistrate Court.

Troopers say Jerry Guy Mullins, 47, of Chelyan Village Apartments, drove Friday to the State Police detachment in Quincy with an elderly woman in the passenger seat of a red Oldsmobile Cutlass.

Trooper R.R. Cervera had been standing outside talking with the secretary who was leaving for the day when the car pulled up, according to the police report.

Mullins told Cervera he needed to report a vehicle that had been stolen from his home, according to the complaint. Cervera immediately noticed the strong odor of alcohol coming from Mullins' breath and recognized that he was having a hard time putting sentences together, according to the report.

Cervera asked Mullins if he had been drinking, and Mullins replied that he had been taking cough medicine, the complaint stated. Cervera asked Mullins to perform the standard field sobriety tests but he refused, the report stated. Mullins took a breath test at the detachment and recorded a blood alcohol content of .097, according to the complaint.
Mullins was charged with driving under the influence.
