Vancouver's archaic driving/speed policies
Hello all, some of you may have seen some of my postings on speeding enforcement policies, etc.
I recently moved to SF/San Jose, and it's amazing how different transportation is managed here. "Knock wood", I notice how the police so far, have been about preventing accidents but not hindering the flow of traffic by giving mass tickets and trick-tactics. On all major highways during rush hour, their version of bad traffic is 65-75km/h, and good traffic is 120-140km/h. How the cops enforce is that as long as you are flow of traffic, they may: 1. Pin point a car and ticket to prove a point to slow down traffic 2. If too fast and furious, they go weaving in and out of traffic, using their loud speakers and telling people to slow down. 3. If no affect with the speakers, they will do hard brakes in front of speeders to slow the traffic to a normative 115-120km/h. The speed limit on city streets is generally 65km/h, so for me, it's been fine going the speed limit. Most people in San Jose/Santa Clara go 80km/h, so the cops look out for those. School Zones are 45km/h, but instead of police, they have reader boards to embarrass the drivers who are going through at 70km/h. It's really an eye-opening experience. I think Vancouver can learn a thing or two on how to prevent accidents while keeping traffic moving. The only people at my office who get tickets, are the ones who go 10 - 15 miles an hour over the speed limit - that's like 15 - 25km/h over the speed limit. |

Wow, that's different. Don't people naturally slow down when they see cop cars on the road anyway?

jeez, in the lower mainland, when they see a cop pulling a guy over, all the champagne colored corollas, slow down to about 30 on the highway and it creates a backwash effect on the whole darn highway...

No - actually a number of ppl in my office, one of them with a brand new 2006 911 Turbo said he doesn't bother because he figures the cop car will stop someone "easier". He just floors it ahead and leaves the others in the crowd.
Today at an intersection, I realized that I am no longer the head of the pack when I take off on a green....in a matter fact, I'm the "grand-mother", whereas in Vancouver, I always see everyone like a dot in a rear-view mirror. It's funny when I see the little 4 cylinders like the Hyundais and Hondas, really work to bits to prove they are just as fast. I'm also taking it easy lately, since I'm close to my $690 49k service. |

yup - I guess it's welcome to the US of A. I almost feel it's pointless to go any faster than the speed limit in the US (roughly 115-120km/h). But I'm forced to go faster because of people tail-gating even in the slow lane.
I was told that in California - it's gotten worse because there aren't enough resources to hire police officers. This morning on the Highway 880, I saw a STI just chomping it away on the HOV lane - must have been at least 160km/h, and the funny thing is, there was an Escalade behind it and S500 behind the Escalade all within 3 car lengths of each other going the same speed.....yup it's crazy. |

I thinks its more to do with the drivers here, not the cops.
Last year I was pulled over, because my insurance decal expired that day, the cop wanted to warn me or something nothing else he wanted It was on a fairly busy 2 lane street, 1 lane each direction. I am pulled over on the shoulder, and the cop behind me. A family pulls up parallel to me and comes to a complete stop, and they all sit there staring at me, traffic begins to build up behind then, and they remain at a complete stop, for at least 2 minutes, people start honking away. The cop finally has to go over to them and ask them to move along, but they won't they continue to just sit there, windows all up. The cop motions to me to go, since I hadn't actually done anything wrong except wait to the last day to renew my insurance, as I drove away, they were still sitting there blocking traffic. This was on 132nd in Surrey, around 80th ave, during rush hour, for people that know the area |

As far as I'm concerened cops in BC have crossed the line from law inforcers to tax collectors...Speeding tickets have nothing to do with safety any more it's all about collecting money. JMO

Agreed - it's a mix of drivers and cops. I have to admit that the speed and "sense of urgency" drivers drive here have nothing to do with cops.
Today later in the afternoon a guy with a M3 was at a stop light...he happened to be digging into something around his glove compartment. He noticed he was late in moving after the light turned green. He waved, then sped off, In the 65km/h zone (45mile zone), he disappared shortly. Cops however, do set some odd traps, the only time I've seen any are at the School Zones, which by the way, are at 45km/h. However, they sit in the zones to scare you more than anything. As mentioned before, I always go within the speeding laws, so I don't worry too much. I suppose if I let it "rip", one of these days, a ticket is on the way. (knock on wood). However, I just don't feel the urge, everyone is going faster than I normally would in Vancouver. No complaints here. |
