No, but I'm the first to get it stuck in the mud. NO effing bueno!! Right up to the door sills. Had to be extracted with a 4WD tractor. OEM 15" tires suck, but I admit I would have probably gotten stuck with knobby tires too. Too much rain down here right now.

FWIW, towed another 100 miles, and averaged 32.8 mpg including the above 38mpg run (200 miles total). I got stuck in the mud, so the mileage went waaaay down after idling for an hour and spinning all four tires. 28.XX I think now that I'm home.

I don't have Cruise (base 2.0i), smooth acceleration and 60-70mph. Light rain during the high MPG, heavy driving rain for the rest of it including towing.

^Hey, I know that dealership.

That Sport 2-tone black-over-gray combo is extremely subtle, eh?

Drove 110 miles to Philly today. Averaged 30 MPG down at a average speed of 44 MPH. Basically went 70 down the interstate and 55 down the local highways; that and somw local city driving sounds pretty good as a mixed average. It passed the break-in mileage point now so I can finally wind out the engine.

Not posting complaints until after it goes into service again.

The platform might be shared with the Forester, just like prev gen.

I'm guessing it is a transmission issue. All manufacturers recommend or demand auto trans for towing and adding a trans oil cooler. There could be issues specific to the CVT which precludes towing. Possibly the CVT runs hotter to begin with (make sense, right?)

So the holes could be for platform-sharers with other transmissions.

That is just what my mind came up with when I stepped through the possibilities in what I believe was a logical manner.

just be glad you don't have a Hyundai....You would have just discovered you don't have a spare tire! Thats right. NO Hyundai has a spare. That was a deal killer for us no matter how good the cars might be.

How was changing the flat on an Impreza? Did you do the tire shuffle per the owner's manual? or was it a rear tire anyway, to save the dilema for another day?

Haven't been on the forums lately but I have put off and possibly am considering not getting a Impreza anymore after reading about all the disappointing MPG's that everyone is getting.(that is the primary reason for getting this car)

Here are my thoughts:

Some are saying the winter fuel blends are affecting MPG's. I'm not sure if this is really true, there are those for example who brought the Mazda 3 w/the SkyActiv engine and are already getting 35-39 MPG right off the bat,
http://www.fuelly.com/car/mazda/3/2012

Check some other cars like the '12 Honda Civic, the owners are getting ~ the advertised ~38MPG)

Can't tow with the 2008+ either. 2007 and older were rated to tow.
There was no reason a 2007 could tow, but not a 2008. They technically had the same drivetrain. That was just a arbitrary decision on Subaru's part, I reckon.

JamesWilson2 just posted how he was getting 38MPG, that isn't good enough? As the engines get fully broken in, the mileage should increase. Whatever car you decide, don't pay too much heed towards the EPA numbers. You'll find more often than not, those numbers are hard to achieve. Just food for thought.

I still contend that the drivetrain needs more breaking in than the engine. My gear oild were all changed over to full synthetics and I feel like it helped to get an extra mpg or so. With 3300 miles on it, its getting better mileage than when new. But mines been doing extremely well on gas since I got it with 6 miles on it.

Drove 166 miles today with this mix:
  • 90 miles 2-lane rural highway with some up and down hills, net elevation gain of 750 feet, speed between 60-70 mph with occasional bursts higher for passing (close to full-throttle to 5500 RPM, 85-90 MPH), 5-6 stop lights in those 90 miles, ambient temp between 55 and 65 degrees F.
  • 36 miles 6-lane rural highway generally downhill, net elevation loss of 2500 feet, speed steady between 65-70, no stops, no bursts for passing, ambient temp between 60-70 degrees F.
  • 32 miles 8-lane rural and urban freeway, net elevation loss of 500 feet, generally 65 mph with as steady a pace as moderate traffic would allow, ambient temp between 65-75 degrees F.
  • 8 miles surface streets, stop and go at around 40 MPH, more-or-less level.
Totals:
  • Net elevation loss of about 2330 feet in 166 miles.
  • Outside temps ranging between 55-75 degrees F.
  • Speed average according to display: 62 MPH.
  • MPG average according to display: 39.0.
  • Odometer reading: 1111 miles at end of trip. (just broken in)

Doing all that downhill certainly helped!
I made a point NOT to attempt any hyper-miling techniques other than keeping speeds more-or-less steady and minimizing acceleration and braking when practical.

On other legs of this long loop trip I didn't do as well (there were two legs with mountain passes (Grapevine and Tehachapi) and colder air and there was some stop-n-go traffic in LA) but still did OK. I haven't done all the calcs, but it looks like the net for the entire 620 mile loop was about 35 MPG, which includes a small bit of city driving. AC was used for about 200 miles.
_________

Issues after 1111 miles:
  • light rattle/flutter in right-side of dashboard. (constant)
  • airbag warning with passenger. (once)
  • an electronic glitch when the display where MPGs are shown freaked out and read screwy numbers for about 5 seconds, blanked out, then returned to normal. (once)
  • more than average moisture in doors. (when I removed door panels for speakers)

Is there even a plastic layer between the door panel and door??
The door moisture is really my only gripe about the car.

Only a handful of owners are getting anywhere close to 38. My old 2001 VW Jetta 1.8T was getting 31 and that was the # on my orig. sticker. So I would think if anything the 38MPG is a very "conservative" EPA estimate compared to 11 years ago don't you think?

Actually back in Dec I was going to pull the trigger on a Sport Limited but looking at MPG revies by other owners made me decide to wait on the side lines.

I am really leaning towards a Mazda 3 Hatch with the SkyActiv, yes it has no AWD but it gets 40 mpg, Xenon lighting/fun to drive/better color combo's. (white/black) , though it has slightly less interior space vs. the subbie but above all , 6spd manual/automatic (better than a cvt no?) .

Can you convince me otherwise? I really do like the subbie but I have a hard timing convincing myself to get this.......

Nope, was only a few miles away from home. Sitting on the outside patio at a resturant. The car was only about 10ft away from us. I thought I was hearing the "compressor" noise that I've heard in the past. Then saw that my RF was flat. Had a thumbscrew that couldn't have been as long as the nail on your pinkie finger. All the more reason to hate these tires if something that small can cause a puncture. Of course my last 2 vehicles had off road tires on them so I may just be used to stronger tires!

No. A CVT has an almost infinite number of "gears",. I would much rather have a CVT. I looked into leasing a 3 SkyActiv, and Mazda pricing is just ridiculous. They wanted more than an Outback would cost. Same with Ford and a Focus hatch.

There are also 3 SkyActiv usrs at that link getting 23-25mpg. So I think it all depends on the driver of a vehicle. As for winter blend fuel, both my Fit and Outback lost 5mpg in the winter.

I must have missed a memo, I always hated mazdas and thought they sucked. Everyone I know who has one hates it. My best friends Protege is a turd, maybe thats why I didnt eveb bat an eye at a Mazda dealership when car shopping. To me, the other cars I was considering were the Honda Civic and Fit anf the Ford Focus and Fiesta.
I've been wishing that Ford would build an AWD Focus for sale to the public since the first gen.

Just ordered a Sport Limited hatchback PSEV this last Saturday, so unfortunately...no photos yet (looking at 6-8 weeks delivery...hopefully no longer!). In the meantime, here are some specifics:
  • Ice Silver Metallic
  • Black Leather
  • CVT
  • Moonroof
  • Navigation
  • Rear Roof Spoiler
  • Sport Mesh Grille
  • Cross Bar Set-Aero (Sport)
  • Extended Cargo Carrier
  • Auto Dim mirror with Homelink
  • Side Sill Plates
  • STI Pedals Set
  • Cargo Nets (rear, seat back, sides)
  • Cargo Tray & Rear Seat Protector
  • Luggage Compartment Cover
  • 110 Volt Outlet
  • Upgraded Speakers
  • Tweeter Kit

In addition to the above options I'll be doing a few select mods to the car, once we live with it for a while (this will be my wife's daily driver, and our weekend "excursion" car). Namely, I plan on adding some 18x8.5 Rota Grids in Hyper Black wrapped in 235/40-18 Conti DWS's. I might think about some coilovers as well (I have KW's on a BMW 335i and love the ability to control the height and dampaning).

This car is more about functionality with some style than anything else...as the aforementioned E90 is my performance outlet. Here's an example of my taste in mods, in case your interested...

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=613284

It seems like this Impreza is a pretty controversial design ...some enthusiasts love it, and some hate it. This is my first venture into the Subaru world, but I must say that I really liked this car from first site.

Pics to come, just as soon as the car arrives!

If you don't need AWD, get the Mazda.

The Mazda 3 hatch was one of the cars I was considering too but I can't stand the Mazda 'grin' exterior styling, so I could never bring myself to actually buy one of those. The AWD was a big deal for me to get the Subaru instead and I am extremely happy with my purchase but the Mazda was a very fun car to drive. If fuel economy and a more 'peppy' powertrain are more important than AWD, the Mazda beats the Impreza.

I am pretty disappointed in the fuel economy I am currently getting with my Impreza (only 26 mpg with mostly highway driving) but I'm coming from a Ford Bronco that got about 10 mpg, so I am still light years better than I was.

Default blinking temp gauge at 37 degrees

I've noticed that on my central gauge where the temperature & MPG info is... whenever the Temp hits 37 degrees it blinks several times (just the temperature part blinks). Whether it hits 37 degrees from a lower or higher figure, each time it turns 37 degrees the blinking happens. At first I thought it was a random glitch, but it still does it 10 weeks in... every time. Not a big deal, just wondering if any one else had noticed this?

That's a safety feature to let you know that it is near or almost freezing outside (to drive accordingly during possibly icy conditions). I personally haven't seen it yet but I read it in the manual.
