Which EJ25 variant do I have?
Hey,
I have an EJ25 in my VW van that was swapped in. I know its an EJ25, has the stamp on the block. However, is there any way to tell which car it is from by anything on the engine? Or which year? I am trying to order parts to do the timing belt, and dont want to mess it up. Visually it looks the same as my 2008 outback upon a quick look, but honestly I'm not sure what I'm looking for. pic for attention! Cheers! Untitled by Robin Foubister, on Flickr

Nice ride! I think all EJ25s use the same timing belt but if you're looking for water pumps or something it may vary. Something to narrow things down would be finding out whether it's a SOHC or DOHC model (not sure that it matters for this job but it might for other things).

SOHC vs DOHC does change which belt kit to get. If DOHC then it might depend on whether it came from a phase 1 or phase 2 EJ25.

I assume SOHC since it's a non turbo engine. Were there any years of DOHC non turbo 2.5s? So is the consensus that most/all of the 2.5 have same belt?

I think early NA ej25's were DOHC. Early model Impreza 2.5 RS for example, I believe.
I defer to snow_bound26 that sohc and dohc will require a different belt. |

Phase 1 2.5 were DOHC. I believe the belt has the same tooth count as the Phase 2 DOHC turbo engines. I believe the SOHC 2.5 has fewer teeth on the belt. Not sure if idlers and water pump are the same.
Don't assume. I'm guessing you bought it with the swap already completed? If so, just look at the heads and if there's 2 circular areas above and below each other on each head then it's DOHC. If there's one circular area on each head then it's SOHC. If that doesn't make sense then post a pic of the heads and we can tell you. |
