Public service announcement (AKA: Tony eats crow)
Ok, this is embarresing, especially since I was always critical of others who did the same thing but I'd rather someone benefit from this. The only difference between their stories and mine is that I was lucky enought to miss any solid objects and that I realize the fault was all mine and not the ABS/tires/etc.
I totally lost control of my RS today and I'm lucky to be here typing this post so hopefully others will learn from my mistake. There have been many posts on this board about people spinning their cars in the wet and here's one more: Factors that lead up the the near-accident in order of significance (99% of which is in #1): 1: Driver error/stupidity 2: Excessive speed 3: Just started drizzling 4: Recently went from a 20mm rear bar to a 22mm 5: Never de-tuned my car from the last autox so AGXes are at 4/8 and tire pressures are high. 6: Alignment with excessive rear toe out 7: Gas tank totally empty (on the way to the gas station) 8: Road is downhill, curved, off camber and has a dip that only the inside tires hit. So I'm speeding heading down this hill, decide I'm going to fast and lift exactly at the same moment as the inside tires hit the little dip. Now I'm sideways looking down the road through the driver-side window, I see no cars (very lucky) and two small concrete walls either side of the road at the bottom of the hill. While I'm ****ting my pants I at least remembered not to nail the brakes, I'm opposite lock and the gas is floored. I don't unwind the wheel in time and the car snap-oversteers the other way around and then some before I catch it. I'm now looking down the road through the rear passenger-side window, opposite lock and floored. Snap-oversteer again but worse and now the car is rotating 540 degrees the other way. I'm looking out the back window as I pirouette between the concrete walls, waiting till I hit. The car come to a stop, facing the right direction in my lane. I didn't hit anything. I immediately get it in gear and get a move on before traffic comes down the hill and hits me. I pull over and figure I'm very lucky I didn't injure myself of anyone else. Just plain stupid. I can't single any one factor out other than driver error in not taking in to account all the factors working against me. Just hope people keep it in mind when they're buying bigger sway bars and driving at the limit. Tony

Hmmm, this sounds all too familiar.
Off ramp, excessive speed, new 24MM sway bar, a few too many beers (not drunk, just stupid enough to try and play with my car at 60 mph to try out the new sway bar), lock to lock steering trying to avoid plastering my A$$ into the J-barrier. |

Dang Tony that's amazing that you didn't hit anything!! Good to hear that you came out of it ok.
BTW, wouldn't you like to have had a camera set up in the car at the time? Adam |

Camera? No! Well maybe a chase car view so I can see what the car is doing rather than scenery spining by in a blur.
Kelley send me this clip from Car Magazine a year ago, I think it's pretty fitting. From CAR magazine, August 1998-- The Impreza is an enormously dangerous car. Not dangerous as in unstable, unpredictable or prone to bursting into flames. No, an Impreza will not kill you, it will get you to kill yourself. This car is, put simply, almost too good at what it does. Too much for any mortal on (just about) any British road. Driven fast, the Impreza feels like it's hoovering itself to the ground, impervious to corners and crests. It feels so normal and stable, that you drive faster to increase the risk quotient somewhat, to get the adrenaline coursing. And then, when the buzz of overtaking helicopters wears off, you notch it up some more. And all the time everything is stable and normal, and CRUNCH...for the only inevitability about an Impreza driven quickly is that if you believe its flattery for a moment, a very heavy impact will be your reward.
